No. 17 Virginia Baseball Falls To Georgia Tech In ACC Tournament

The No. 17 Virginia baseball team lost 17-5 to No. 8 seed Georgia Tech Friday afternoon at the ACC Baseball Championship at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C. The game was halted in the seventh inning because of the tournament's 10-run mercy rule. The No. 4 seed in the tournament, Virginia (37-17-1) is now 1-1 in pool play.

UVa concludes pool play at 3 p.m. Saturday when it takes on top-seeded Florida State.

Colin Harrington (R-So., Johnstown, Pa.) tied a career high with three hits for the Cavaliers, while Derek Fisher (Fr., Rexmont, Pa.) and Branden Cogswell (Fr., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) each added a pair of hits. Zane Evans went 3-for-4 with six RBI to highlight a big offensive day for Georgia Tech (34-24).

UVa starting pitcher Scott Silverstein (R-Jr., Olney, Md.) took the loss for UVa and fell to 2-5 after allowing four earned runs, four hits and a walk in 2.1 innings. Cole Pitts (6-4) notched the win for Georgia Tech after allowing four runs (two earned) in five innings.

The Yellow Jackets' 17-run performance easily marked the most runs allowed by Virginia this year. The Cavaliers surrendered 12 runs in a March 17 loss at Florida State. UVa had not allowed more than six runs in any of its previous 25 games.

Virginia bolted to an early 3-0 edge, with a pair of runs in the second and one in the third. In the second, Jared King (R-Jr., Radford, Va.) reached on a leadoff error. Harrington and Brandon Downes (Fr., South Plainfield, N.J.) hit back-to-back singles to bring in a run. After a sacrifice bunt by Nate Irving (Fr., Yonkers, N.Y.), Keith Werman (Sr., Vienna, Va.) laid down a squeeze bunt to bring Harrington home.

UVa added a run in the third. Fisher hit a leadoff single and stole second base. He scored on a one-out single to right by Harrington.

Georgia Tech sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run third inning. Silverstein hit Connor Lynch with a pitch to start the inning, and Kyle Wren followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt, Brandon Thomas singled to center to plate a pair of runs. Jake Davies doubled to knock Silverstein out, and Evans doubled against Nick Howard (Fr., Olney, Md.) to give the Yellow Jackets the lead. One out later Mott Hyde lined a home run to left field to push the Georgia Tech lead to 6-3.

The Yellow Jackets padded their lead in the fourth inning, scoring four times to move ahead 10-3. After Howard walked the first two batters, Wren and Sam Dove, Thomas lined a double down the right-field line to score a run. Howard intentionally walked Davies, and Austin Young (So., Mechanicsville, Va.) came on in relief. On Young's first pitch, Evans hit a scorcher off the glove of a diving Stephen Bruno (R-So., Audubon, N.J.) at third base, and two runs scored on the single. One out later Hyde hit a sacrifice fly.

Virginia cut a run from the lead in the fifth inning, getting singles from Harrington and Irving before Werman hit a run-scoring grounder to second base. UVa chipped away with another tally in the sixth, as Cogswell led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Fisher single.

Georgia Tech got those runs back in its half of the sixth when Evans went the opposite way for a two-run home to right field.

In the seventh inning Thomas Smith drew a leadoff walk and scored when Lynch doubled to left-center field. One out later Dove tripled to right-center to plate Lynch. After Thomas was hit by a pitch, Davies launched a three-run homer over the right-center field wall to trigger the mercy rule.

theodore - News and Society -Crime News Blog: Shattering Cycles ...

Once again, we've been knocked asunder with news about another high school shooting. What is the answer? Anger seems to be on the rampage in our society, especially in adolescents. Perhaps we need to take a many pronged approach to this situation. Let's consider several possibilities.

1. Reduce violence in the media. Since the 1980's, killings, rampant sex, and explicit horror have all proliferated in TV programs. Horrific portrayal of hideous acts have increased exponentially.Videos and cable were coming into their prime, and censorship of TV programs began to go by different rules in an effort to compete. As a result, more and more violence and sex began to show up on television. We've had a whole generation exposed to escalating levels of aggressive acts and sexual promiscuity. They've become desensitized to human suffering and to basic morality. Adding injury to insult, the portrayal of horrible acts has become more and more blatant and offensive. One can hardly turn on the television without witnessing the worst kind of visceral horror. Skeletons are blackened with days of decay; blood abounds everywhere; and our senses are slayed with escalating levels of heartless actions.

2. Enforce stricter gun control. But I don't think this is the only answer. We need to reach troubled youth with heart and spirit changing beliefs. Young boys in particular tend to become disenfranchised when their lives are ripped apart. Make every effort to address issues of anger and shame in our young people. Boys tend to act out their anger. Girls turn in inward. Both are extremely detrimental.

3. Get back to spiritual basics. Statistics show that church attendance is at an all-time low. In Europe, two percent of the population attends church regularly. Spiritual institutions are kept open for tourists, not residents! This is sad. In 1991, weekly church attendance was at 49%. Today it's at 40%. There may be a direct correlation between the decline in spiritual activities and crime. This is debatable at best, but the lack of conscience formation may be a factor.

4. Get young people involved in wholesome activities. Sports, music lessons, dance lessons, and karate all come to mind.

5. Do everything to steer young people away from addictions. Get them involved in anti-drug programs. Talk to them routinely about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Chemical dependencies cause huge problems in individuals, families, and communities.

Readers, I welcome additional ideas.

I'm Barbara Altman
Raised in an alcoholic home, I became depressed and riddled with anxiety at an early age. In an effort to build a good life, I turned to my love of classical music for comfort, financial resources, and a place in the community. Over the years, I have dealt with depression in a variety of ways, from counseling to alternative and traditional healing modalities. One of the purposes in my life is to convey hope to those who have suffered from depression and I hope to do this in my writings and in speaking engagements.

Shopping in London: St Jude?s in the City pop-up

Another day, another pop-up shop. But this is one that you won?t want to miss ? and it?s a Wee Birdy favourite, too. St Jude?s is a British-based company with two studios ? one in Norfolk, England and the other in Morayshire, Scotland. Founded by Simon & Angie Lewin, the company collaborates with a variety of artists to design and produce a range of fabrics, wallpapers and other homewares.

I?ve been a long-time admirer of this little gem of a company and when we moved into our new flat in Sydney, I bought a pair of Angie Lewin?s beautiful dandelion print cushions and had them shipped over to remind me of the British countryside.

Many of Angie?s prints feature motifs inspired by nature ? blossoms, seeds, berries, leaves, stems and stamens ? that are distinctly British in style, and are reminiscent of mid-century designs.

Alongside St Jude?s range of artist-designed cushions, fabrics and wallpapers, Emily Sutton?s ?High Street? series of original paintings will also be exhibited at the pop-up shop in central London, alongside new work by Mark Hearld and Angie Lewin.

Wee Birdy: Emily Sutton's high street

Each work portrays a traditional Victorian shopfront with the most exquisite details. Pigeons peck at crumbs outside the bakery and community notices are plastered all over the door of the pet shop. The paintings are available to purchase for ?495 each.

And have a look at Emily?s series of birds, which I?ve never had an opportunity to showcase on Wee Birdy before.

These glorious hand-painted and hand-stitched birds were created for a past show, and have long since sold-out. I?m super-pleased to finally feature them here.

Headaches Migraines: Health and Fitness: Headaches Migraines ...

Everyone gets a headache at some point in his or her life but dealing with chronic headaches can be a very stressful and debilitating condition. Caused by so many different things, it can be difficult to determine the exact source, making curing them nearly impossible in some cases. Symptoms and activities before, during and after such an attack are at times the only way to determine their cause, effect and treatment.

Causes

Chronic headaches can be caused by certain behavior or actions that allow stress to tighten the muscles of the neck, shoulders and back, leading to stress headaches developing. These will occur every time the stressful situation occurs, becoming almost psychological in its frequency and intensity. Being around certain foods or chemicals can cause headaches for hours afterwards, with the patient never realizing that their presence was the cause. Testing for allergies would then be the first step to treat that type of headache.

Physical ailments can also have headaches as its main symptom, as well as its potential cause. Someone that has suffered an injury to an arm or leg can begin to unconsciously tailor their movements so that they avoid triggering any pain associated with that injury and in doing so, put added stress onto joints and muscles while compensating that normally would not have happened. This can lead to spinal maladjustment or a pinched nerve, resulting in severe cervical pain and headaches from the physical stress.

People known to abuse substances like alcohol and drugs will often develop severe headaches when they try to abstain, because the chemical they have become dependent on are no longer present, causing the body to feel as if it is starving, with headaches becoming the prevalent symptom.

Avoiding Misdiagnosis

A continuing problem when it comes to diagnosing headaches is treating it with pain medications without uncovering the true source of the pain. This can lead to too much dependence on the medication, without having any true effect of the condition. One way to avoid misdiagnosis is for the patient to keep a headache journal during treatment, so that the doctor can see everything that occurred in their lives before the attack, how long it lasted and what the patient did immediately afterwards that did not bring on another attack. This can be especially helpful when the headache is actually brought on by what can be termed allergic triggers or when something within their regular routines may be contributing to their illness, like stress or psychological traumas.

Treatments

The only effective treatments for chronic headaches will be those that eliminate or solve the root cause of the problem. For stressful situations that bring on headaches, relaxation techniques, for example, will have more of an effect on the headache than prescribed medication. Lifestyle changes can make allergy based headaches a thing of the past, while chiropractic treatments will remove the physical condition causing the headache to occur. At its heart, the only true treatment for this condition is honest dialogue between doctor and patient.

Venture Capital Investment Competition 2012 ? MBA Blogs ...

So the saying goes, ?if you tell me I will forget; if you show me I may remember; but if you involve me I will learn.? This has been especially true for all of the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) team throughout this year?s competition. Bringing together key professional skills and enhancing business acumen, the 2012 VCIC has been the most rewarding part of the MBA course so far. The following summary discusses some of what has become clear to the team through our involvement in and reflection on all aspects of the experience. In short, the VCIC was an excellent learning experience, and very much in-line with the ?learning-by-doing? philosophy of Manchester Business School. And the socialising wasn?t bad either!

Beginning as far back as October 2011, our team, ultimately winning the ?Entrepreneurs? Choice? award at the European finals in Oxford, learned to quickly understand business propositions, evaluate whether they offered an investible business opportunity, if so then draft under what terms the investment should be made, and ultimately recommend how the entrepreneur should proceed.

A further key aspect of the competition was the opportunity to experience several pressurised negotiations with real-time entrepreneurs around a variety of business topics, and then receive specific feedback from both the entrepreneurs and judges at each stage of the competition. This was, perhaps, the most useful learning experience, helping to build skills that are applicable to all areas of professional life.

To touch upon our own experiences, it?s best to go first to what we would do differently. We realised at the beginning of the competition how little we knew about the Venture Capital (VC) industry and about how, where and why Venture Capitalists (VCs) invest. We were initially under the impression that the challenges we would face in the competition were more-or-less constrained to the stated competition rules. This turned out not to be the case, especially when facing interrogative questions from the competition judges ? VC professionals ? about why, how and how much we invested, why we invested under the terms we did, and what we saw as the next steps for the business in question. In short, anything VC-related was ?fair game?, not just the stated scope of the competition.

The key point for anyone in the future is that the entrepreneurs and judges will not treat you like a competition participant or give you any allowance for not being a professional Venture Capitalist. They will talk to you in their dialect and challenge you on the intricate meanings of terminology, which to complicate matters could be dependent upon the terms? contexts. In doing so the competition demands you behave, respond and altogether emulate a realVC outfit. To some extent we did, but if we were to begin again, it would be with the assumption that whilst the competition rules are to be acknowledged, our preparation and decisions would not necessarily be constrained or directed by them.

The 2012 VCIC team with their prize

Where the team did excel is how we worked together. I was continually impressed by the work-ethic, resourcefulness and professional attitude that was displayed throughout the six months of the VCIC. As both the competition and our contextual understanding progressed, a pleasing aspect of the team dynamic was the continual and open feedback ? self-regulation you could call it ? on everything associated with our preparation.

This fostered an approach to everything we did that was mature, established by consensus and involving all team members. I think this was the foundation upon which we impressed the judges at the finals in Oxford University?s Said Business School, as it particularly enabled us to work and appear as united as we were, conduct ourselves inter-personally to a level that belied the short time we had actually worked together, and clearly engaged with the entrepreneurs in an assertive yet diplomatic manner.

A key point for anyone in the future is that the entrepreneurs will judge you primarily based on whether they would want to work with you on their idea that could potentially change their lives, if not so much more. How you interact as a team, and how you conduct yourselves socially and professionally thus matters greatly. I suppose the element to remember for the VCIC is to choose your team members wisely; the team?s character will count for as much, if not more than it does in wider professional life. And I think it?s fair to say that you can learn about technical skills and develop an understanding far more readily than you can learn to be charismatic or genuine, or even likable, all of which are essential to do well in the VCIC.

The 2012 VCIC team representing Manchester Business School was: (from left to right) Torben M?ller, Gareth Wilson, Maanas Varun, Rafael Castelo Branco, Anthony Clark-Jones

This is not to say, however, that to progress, you can rely on a glossy exterior. You can?t. The more granular aspects of the VC industry, what is currently ?fashionable? in VC, and the complex environment in which entrepreneurs and VCs operate must also be understood, at least to the extent of being able to withstand a cross-examination of up to ten competition judges, if not the entrepreneurs themselves. The balance, let?s say, is to maintain a diplomatic, assertive and professional demeanour with this suitability underpinned by a scientific knowledge of the relevant processes, terminology and structures, of which the VC industry has many. Not easy, but clearly not impossible.

On reflection, there perhaps isn?t a winning formula for the VCIC. There is always an element of luck involved in which business propositions need to be analysed and what style of VC the judges follow. Nevertheless, excellent team-work, comprehensive preparation and the ability to remain composed yet assertive when being questioned on reasonably complex information will always enable future MBS teams to do well in this ever-more-popular competition.

CANNES, France (AP) ? Kristen Stewart understands the lure of the open road. So do her "On The Road" co-stars, Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley.

The three young actors play the central love triangle in Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's Beat Generation novel, an experience that has helped them appreciate why the book is considered a classic.

The tale of wannabe writer (and Kerouac surrogate) Sal Paradise and his friend Dean Moriarty crisscrossing the United States in search of freedom and the elusive "it" was published in 1957. But Stewart said the way it captures the heady feeling of young adulthood is timeless.

"You're so filled with something that is hard to identify at this age," said the "Twilight" star, who plays Dean's teenage bride Marylou, a free spirit torn between the lure of adventure and desire for a more settled life.

"You're just bursting, and (the characters) value that so much," said Stewart, who is just 22 herself. "They don't ignore it. That celebration of youth and exploration is just something that you envy.

"I read it right at the point when I was about to get my (driver's) license, and I thought, wow, I want to meet people who push me the way people push each other. I wanted to be more like them."

Minnesota-born Hedlund ("Troy," ''Tron: Legacy") plays the carnal, vital Moriarty, a character modeled on Kerouac's friend Neal Cassady. He said some things have changed since Kerouac wrote his freewheeling, impressionistic story,

"Back then a car was 100 bucks and all you had to choose between was a radio and a heater, and things seemed a little freer," said the 27-year-old actor. "The roads seemed more open than they are today, but a young person's ambitions are still the same. Everybody between the ages of 17 and 21 or 22 still feels that they can achieve anything they want in life if they are ambitious enough."

"On the Road," which premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival, has been a long time coming. Kerouac, who died in 1969, hoped to see his book filmed, and actors linked to an adaptation over the decades range from Marlon Brando to Brad Pitt.

Brazilian director Salles, who made the Che Guevara road movie "The Motorcycle Diaries," has been involved since 2004, spending years interviewing surviving Beat Generation figures for an unreleased documentary on the book.

He finally got the go-ahead, with Francis Ford Coppola's son Roman Coppola producing, to shoot a film whose fourth main character is the American landscape ? though Salles had to travel far and wide to recreate the 1940s U.S. setting. The movie was shot in Canada, Chile and Mexico as well as the United States.

The film opened in France this week and is due for a fall release in the U.S.

The actors felt the weight of expectation from the book's millions of fans, but say it helped them form a bond ? albeit one less erotically entangled than that of their characters.

"We were the only people there who really know and understand what it feels like to be gifted, or burdened, with the responsibility of playing these characters," said Riley, whose breakthrough role was as Joy Division singer Ian Curtis in "Control." ''So we really did have that sort of feeling that we're separate from the others.

"Garrett and I particularly spent six months in one another's pockets," said the 32-year-old British actor. "I have friends where I don't know if I could spend that much time with them. And for a Yorkshireman and a lad from Minnesota ? two young actors who both have their own ambitions ? it could have been an absolute disaster, a clash of egos. But Garrett was always there for me to lean on, and vice versa."

Salles had firm ideas about the actors he wanted for the film. The cast includes Kirsten Dunst, "Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge and Viggo Mortensen as characters inspired by real-life Beat generation figures.

"I felt like it was cheating or something, that we had the best cast, in my mind, that's ever been assembled," Hedlund said. "Maybe there was something about each and every one of us that was similar to him in a way, to (explain) why we got along the way he did. There was no rotten egg within the bunch, and that's so rare."

The director said he was determined to cast Stewart even before "Twilight" made her a star, after he heard raves about her performance in the Sean Penn's 2007 Alaskan drama "Into The Wild."

"I remember writing down the name," Salles said, "so I wouldn't forget it."

Male leaders who make mistakes are judged more harshly than women in the same situation

What do employees think of their boss when he or she makes a mistake? According to a new study, leaders who make mistakes are seen as less competent, less desirable to work for and less effective than leaders who do not. And if the leader is a man making a mistake in a man's world, he is judged more harshly than a woman making the same mistake in a man's world. The work by Christian Thoroughgood, from the Pennsylvania State University in the US, and his colleagues, is published online in Springer's Journal of Business and Psychology.

It is a fact that leaders do make mistakes, and these mistakes can have far-reaching negative consequences. For leaders to be effective, followers must trust their ability to make difficult decisions, execute their initiatives and act as positive organizational figureheads - it is critical that followers see their leaders as competent. So when they get it wrong, followers question their competence and are less willing to follow them and work for them.

Thoroughgood and his colleagues looked at how male and female leaders are rated, not when they succeed, but when they make mistakes. They were particularly interested in whether subordinates would perceive their leaders differently according to the type of mistake they made and their gender, i.e., a man or a woman working in either a man's world (construction) or a woman's world (nursing).

A total of 284 undergraduates from a large northeastern university in the US, who had worked on average for nearly three years, read a series of fictional emails describing a leader's behavior. They were asked to envision themselves as subordinates of the leader - either a man or a woman. In the emails, the leaders made two types of errors: task errors and relationship errors.

The participants then answered an online survey measuring their perception of the leader's competence in both task and relationship matters, their desire to work for the leader as well as their opinion of whether the leader was effective or not.

The researchers found that errors did damage perceptions of leaders who commit them. Leaders who made mistakes were viewed as less competent in both task and relationship areas and 'subordinates' were less likely to want to work for them. They were also seen as less effective.

In addition, the authors observed an effect of gender. Male leaders were evaluated more negatively than female leaders for errors made in masculinized work domains. The authors suggest that male leaders may be seen as violating expectations of male performance in this context, whereas women are expected to fail in masculine work settings.

The authors conclude: "Our results suggest that leader errors matter; errors damage perceptions of a leader's competence and follower's desire to work for them. While it is impractical to suggest leaders should attempt to avoid errors altogether, they should recognize the different types of errors they make and consider how these errors impact their followers in different ways."

Home Improvement Projects Aren't For ... - Ocean Seven Roofing Inc.

Not everyone enjoys home improvement and they have a hard time with it too. There are some jobs that nearly anyone can do once they understand what is involved. Take a look at these ideas, and use them as a starting point to improve your home.

Always personalize your goals when it comes to home improvement. Add your own touch to home improvements.

Any time you are working on any kind of heavier project, then you should be sure to have all the safety gear you need. That includes everything from back harnesses to gloves, helmets and safety goggles.

Get together with others in your community and share tools that are used on a limited basis. This can prevent you from having to purchase an expensive specialty tool that you?ll use only once. Instead, you can borrow it from the neighborhood handyman who uses it on a more regular basis. You can even trade tips with your neighbor.

Check around your home?s foundation, looking for any low or sinking areas. Any area that would allow water to pool up or run through the area must be filled with soil and compacted as well as possible to prevent damage to your yard. Water surrounding the foundation of your home can cause wood to rot, as well as seep into parts of yor home.

If you are considering a home improvement endeavor, allot yourself plenty of time to create a formal plan and start thinking of ideas right away. It is important to start brainstorming early, that way you have more ideas ready when it?s time to begin working. Do not concentrate on finding the right colors for your room, it just stresses you out!

Keep your water usage in mind when deciding how to update your home. You will want to look into toilets, water heaters and shower heads that require a decreased water flow amount in order to help cut costs and raise your home?s worth. Updating fixtures and appliances to more efficient ones not only improves the value of your home but it looks more attractive too.

Homeowners should avoid putting contractors? advice on a pedestal. Contractors, even those with stellar reputations, could take advantage of homeowners who place too much trust in them. Go with your gut if something does not seem right get a second opinion.

A quick and easy home improvement project involves applying fresh caulk to all your windows. This benefits you in several ways. It lowers your utility bills, and helps protect against damage to the windows as well. This prevents your windows from becoming drafty and letting moisture in, which can promote mold growth as well as raise heating costs. Use a chisel to removed old, cracked caulking and apply fresh caulk.

Before doing anything further to the room, paint to avoid further complications. It is a lot easier to paint before the floor is installed. No matter how careful you are with drop cloths and tarps when painting, someone involved will get some on the floor.

Home improvement is more complicated than is commonly realized. There is a lot of work involved, but the end result is almost always worth it. If you take advantage of these great tips, you will be prepared and much more likely to be successful in your home improvement projects.

An entire career spent in asphalt shingle roof has given me a vast pool of knowledge which I wish to share with other interested people in my industry.

Secrets to Superhero Physiques Revealed ? Get Behind-the-Scenes Workout Tips from The Avengers

Behind-the-Scenes Avengers? Workouts at Bodybuilding.com

Boise, ID (PRWEB) May 04, 2012

Fans can now get a superhero physique with the workouts that turned Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson into real-life Avengers. Whether fans are looking to become a lithe ladies? man like Tony Stark, a Godlike Thor, a broad-shouldered Captain America, or a nimble assassin like the Black Widow; they can find the exact workout plan for them. Bodybuilding.com, the Internet?s most-visited bodybuilding and fitness site, has gained access to behind-the-scenes tips straight from their trainers: Duffy Gaver, Steve Zim, and Brad Bose.

Chris Hemsworth trained hard for six months under the watchful eye of trainer Duffy Gaver, a former Navy SEAL who also trained Scarlett Johansson for her role as Black Widow. To build massive muscle, Gaver had Hemsworth lift big and eat bigger. Hemsworth downed huge amounts of chicken and red meat. For thickness, Duffy had Chris rock a variety of heavy rows: bent-over barbell, dumbbell, lat pull-downs, extra arm work, and shoulder moves. To create Johansson?s lithe athleticism, Duffy made her do lots of timed reps. She pushed through combinations of air squats, running, push-ups, wall-balls, and pull-ups to build stamina and strength for her epic fight sequences.

Chris Evans was trained for Fantastic Four and The Avengers by Steve Zim, best-selling author of Hot Point Fitness and a trainer in Hollywood. Evans took only four weeks to prep for the movie, performing four workouts per week lasting an hour and 15 minutes per session. Zim had Evans complete four sets per exercise performed; usually for 10 reps. Evans paused at the top and bottom of each rep for maximum muscle engagement. To help achieve a lean look, he also ran for 15 minutes on a treadmill after each workout at a 10% incline.

After months of hard training and consuming 5,000 calories a day, Robert Downey Jr. added 25 pounds of lean muscle to the frame he carried in Sherlock Holmes with the help of his trainer Brad Bose. ?In the long run, consistency and intensity are far more important than how much weight you lift,? Bose says. ?And Robert possesses both of those.?
