Trouble with the chair: Clint mocked for RNC bit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Clint Eastwood earned plenty of bad reviews for his latest performance: a bizarre, rambling endorsement of Mitt Romney.

"Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic," tweeted film critic Roger Ebert as Eastwood adlibbed Thursday night to an audience of millions ? and one empty chair ? on stage at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. "He didn't need to do this to himself. It's unworthy of him."

Eastwood carried on a kooky, long-winded conversation with an imaginary President Barack Obama, telling him that he failed to deliver on his promises, and it's time for Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, to take over.

"Mr. President, how do you handle promises that you have made when you were running for election, and how do you handle them? I mean, what do you say to people?" he said at one point to the empty chair.

Twitter was instantly ablaze with comments mocking the Oscar-winning director of "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby."

"Clint has now eclipsed the total word count of his last three films," tweeted film critic Richard Roeper during the speech, which was intended to last five minutes but went on for nearly 12.

Howard Kurtz, host of CNN's "Reliable Sources," said "Clint's empty chair act" was the "weirdest convention moment I have ever seen." Joe Scarborough, the conservative host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," declared that "a great night for Mitt Romney just got sidetracked by Clint Eastwood."

Minutes after Eastwood began his speech, someone created an (at)InvisibleObama account on Twitter. It has already amassed 30,000 followers and counting.

"I heard that Clint Eastwood was channeling me at the RNC," tweeted comic actor Bob Newhart, known for his one-sided conversation bits. "My lawyers and I are drafting our lawsuit."

The 82-year-old actor and director also talked about Oprah Winfrey, Obama's unfulfilled promise to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and lawyers. At one point, he referenced dismissing Obama and making a change.

"When somebody doesn't do the job, you gotta let 'em go," Eastwood said. The tough-guy actor of "Dirty Harry" fame then drew a finger across his throat.

The Obama campaign shot back afterward by tweeting a photo of the back of the president's chair, with Obama's head peeking over it, along with the line: "This seat's taken."

Eastwood, a fiscal conservative who takes left-leaning stands on social issues such as gay marriage and environmental protections, made waves with conservatives earlier this year when he starred in a Super Bowl spot for Chrysler, a company that benefited from government support. Eastwood, who endorsed Romney earlier this month at a campaign event in Sun Valley, Idaho, and once served as mayor of Carmel, Calif., defended his appearance in the commercial, noting it had nothing to do with his politics.

Inside the convention, the crowd cheered Eastwood's entrance and shouted his famed catchphrase, "Go ahead, make my day." But backstage, stern-faced Romney aides winced at times as Eastwood's remarks stretched on. After his speech, Romney's camp defended Eastwood.

"He's an American icon," Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho told CNN's Piers Morgan. "You can't look at him at through the same political lens that you would other politicians. He's Clint Eastwood."

There was seemingly more discussion Thursday night on Twitter about Eastwood's awkward performance than Romney's actual acceptance speech.

"Is this a segment for 'Mrs. Eastwood and Company'?" asked "Star Trek" actor Zachary Quinto on Twitter, referencing the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians"-like E! reality series starring Eastwood's wife, Dina.

Several celebrities and comedians lightheartedly hypothesized on the micro-blogging site how Democrats could top the over-the-top routine at their own convention in Charlotte, N.C., next week.

"To restore balance to the universe, Obama must have Tommy Chong onstage at the DNC talking to a steak," joked Patton Oswalt.

Original "Star Trek" actor George Takei said he was "drafting a DNC speech to (an) imaginary Romney in an empty factory."

"Saturday Night Live" cast member Seth Myers had an entirely different idea: "(Vice President Joe) Biden has to go shirtless for DNC to top it."

For Hollywood veteran Eastwood, his chance to rebound likely comes Sept. 21 in more familiar territory. That's when his next film, the baseball drama "Trouble With the Curve," opens.

Improve The Look Of Your Home With These Helpful Tips.

When you change the looks of your home, you will feel much better about it. You can take simple ideas and incorporate them into your everyday decorating and remodeling. Reading this article will give you some tips on how to successfully plan out your own home improvement projects.

Changing the lighting in your home can make a dramatic difference. Having a bright room will feel warm and inviting to members the house. Putting in an additional light fixture can really brighten up a room. Making a dark room lighter can make your whole house feel more livable.

Buy new furniture every once and a while, refreshing the appearance and keeping the rooms looking new. Add a little extra flare to any apartment or room by shopping at local stores and thrift-markets that offer killer deals. You may find some real hidden treasures among used things, such as furniture. Some may need a lot of work, but if you invest enough time, they can greatly improve your home.

A lot of times, people selling their house will concentrate more on big extras, like radiant heating. However, they avoid painting the outside of the house or fixing the crooked shutters! Buyers will see these items and think that it?s a fixer-upper. Keep in mind that first impressions matter even with a house.

Doing some of these remodeling projects can save you a lot with your energy bills. You can cut your carbon emissions by using Energy Star light bulbs. They also use only 25 percent of the energy used by regular bulbs. Insulating your own water heater can prevent energy waste and save you on your bill.

It?s crucial that you change the air filters in your home. Not only do you create a better environment to breathe in, but it can also make your air conditioner run better. A lot of problems that happen with heating and cooling have to do with dirty air filters.

Give your front walkway a lift! A home improvement you can do that?s completely original is to take out a front walkway and put down brick pavers. It is a staightforward job, but does take a lot of work. Rent a jackhammer to remove the old concrete walkway. Afterwards you should have a good surface to lay down the pavers!

Ask for references from any contractor you hire. You will be allowing someone to come into your home and make changes; therefore, it is important to check them out thoroughly. Think how you would check references or recommendations for any one you would hire, especially to work in your home.

Putting in hand railings will make your home more safe and attractive. Places where you need to be sure you have railings are decks, balconies, stairways and entrance ways. Railings come in handy when it comes to those who are advanced in years or children. You can use many different kinds of materials such as aluminum, copper and many others. If you want your home to be safer, install railings.

If you can afford it, real wood floors are a better choice than laminate. Laminate looks almost like real wood and is easy to care for, but it cannot be refinished. In about 10 or 20 years time, the floor will need replacing rather than just getting it refinished.

If you?ve recently had new carpeting or flooring installed, you can extend its great looks for years by establishing a rule banning the wearing of shoes. Strategically place storage and alternatives, such as slippers, at each entrance of your home ? encouraging guests and family members to remove their shoes upon entering. This can go a long way in helping to keep dirt and debris from scratching or staining wood floors or carpeting.

When did you last check out your door handles? By cleaning or changing the door handles, you can easily change up the look in your home. If your door knobs are looking dull, consider replacing them with new brass ones.

Before you attempt to repaint a wall with glossy paint on it, use a good primer. This will help ensure the paint adheres to the wall, and can keep the new color from peeling. Priming is also especially important when painting over a dark wall with a new lighter colored paint.

If your home improvement project involves multiple jobs in one room of your home, you may want to consider the demand of each job and the order in which they should be completed. If both the cabinets and the floors need to be replaced, doing the cabinets first is a good plan. If you do, the debris will affect the old floor. Create a plan and get started today.

Make sure the best parts of your home stand out. Never block the view from windows that overlook ponds or other water features and always remove canopies from beds so that detailed ceilings are not hidden. Whatever the case may be, you want to enhance the selling points. The buyer will love your home if you work hard at it.

Maintain your septic tank regularly. There are chemicals you can buy that will make things decompose faster and stop it from overflowing. Make sure that your home improvement projects do not incidentally mess up your septic tank. If necessary, get your house?s detailed layout and be very careful to avoid expensive damages.

Now you realize just how much home improvements can make your feel about your property. Lots of ways exist to improve your home?s appearance. Use the tips from this article to make home improvements you may have never known you could make.

Urinary protein excretion ? even in the normal range ? raises diabetics' heart risks

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? In individuals with type 2 diabetes, any degree of measurable urinary protein excretion -- even in what is considered the normal range -- increases their risk of experiencing heart problems, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of new study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). The findings could help identify patients who should be treated with cardioprotective medications.

Some patients with type 2 diabetes experience kidney problems that cause them to excrete increased amounts of the protein albumin in their urine, a condition called albuminuria. These patients have a considerably higher risk of developing heart problems -- such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure -- than other diabetic patients and people in the general population, who are "normoalbuminuric," with urinary albumin excretion levels of less than 20 ?g/min.

Investigators have wondered if any level of albumin excretion -- for example at a level that is the upper range of what is considered normal -- might increase a diabetic patient's risk of developing heart problems. "It would be important to know whether there is a level for albuminuria that differentiates individuals in need of cardioprotective intervention from those with a low risk," said Giuseppe Remuzzi, MD, FRCP, (Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research and Ospedali Riuniti, in Bergamo, Italy). "This is a major health issue since patients with normoalbuminuria account for at least 90% of the diabetic population," he added.

Through an extension of a clinical trial originally designed for other purposes, Dr. Remuzzi, along with Piero Ruggenenti, MD, Esteban Porrini MD (Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research), and others, evaluated the relationship between albumin excretion levels and heart problems in 1,208 normoalbuminuric patients with type 2 diabetes who were followed for an average of 9.2 years.

The researchers found that any degree of measurable albumin excretion bore significant heart risks: ? For each 1 ?g/min in albumin excretion at the start of the study, there was a progressive incremental risk of experiencing heart problems during follow-up. ? Even albuminuria of 1-2 ?g/min significantly associated with increased risk compared with albuminuria <1 ?g/min.

When the investigators looked only at the subgroup of patients who took antihypertensive drugs called ACE inhibitors from the start of the study and throughout the follow-up period, they found no link between albumin excretion levels and heart risks. This suggests that ACE inhibitors have heart-protective properties that may benefit diabetic patients with albuminuria and normoalbuminuria alike. Future clinical trials are needed to identify levels of albumin excretion above which such cardioprotective therapy is beneficial.

Toshiba unveils U925t Ultrabook with slide-out touchscreen, keeps the price a secret for now

DNP EMBARGO Toshiba unveils U925t Ultrabook with slideout touchscreen, keeps the price a secret for now

If Computex was a coming out party for Windows 8 Ultrabooks, Toshiba was one of the wallflowers: though the company teased some concept devices, it only let journalists photograph them from certain angles, and with their screens turned off. Now, though, we're closing the summer with yet another tradeshow, and Toshiba is using the occasion to demo its wares in more detail. The company just announced the Satellite U925t, that Windows 8 slider we showed you earlier in the summer. No word on price, except that it's expected to be "slightly north" of the Satellite U845W, which starts at $1,000. We do know that it will ship on October 26th, the day Win 8 formally launches.

In the meantime, Toshiba hasn't left any specs to the imagination. What we have here is a 12.5-inch Ultrabook with a slide-out, Gorilla Glass touchscreen. Pushing the screen up reveals a built-in keyboard, and we were pleasantly surprised in our hands-on to find that it's actually quite spacious. (With this form factor, the propped up display usually cuts into the usable keyboard space.) The keys are also backlit, and have the same feel as what you'll find on Toshiba's U845 and U845W Ultrabooks. That is to say they're shallow, and very, very quiet. The whole package weighs "just over three pounds" and measures about 0.8 inches thick, making it easy enough to stuff in a carry-on.

When you push up the display you'll also find another surprise: an autofocusing camera on the back side. For good measure, there's also a lower-res shooter up front. On the inside, it packs a Core i5 processor, Intel HD 4000 graphics and a 128GB SSD. Like many other Ultrabooks, it also has Intel's Wireless Display tech on board, though you'll of course have to buy the requisite set-top box separately. Taking a tour around the device, you'll find a mix of tablet- and laptop-style trappings: two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, vents, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a volume rocker and a button for turning off screen auto-rotation.

Software-wise, Toshiba is bundling Desktop Assist, a utility designed to give Windows 8 newbies quick access to files, programs and the like. You'll also see Live Tiles for things like Toshiba Central (a support hub), Book Place and Toshiba App Place. That's all she wrote for now, but expect us to follow up closer to October 26th with a more specific price. Until then, we've got hands-on photos below, along with a short walk-through video.

Christie Urges Florida Delegates to Back Romney Without Reservation

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie speaks during the Florida delegation breakfast Thursday at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor.

RICK RUNION | THE LEDGER

Published: Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 3:23 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 3:23 p.m.

PALM HARBOR | New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie urged the Florida delegation Thursday morning to follow his example in the presidential election's homestretch to sway voters: speak in an unapologetic and outspoken way about their party's ideas.

?American people don't want and can't tolerate plain vanilla leadership at this point,? he said.

The Republican governor also shared an anecdote about what led him to support Mitt Romney as early as October.

Before Romney stopped by his home for a meal, Christie told his children to make themselves scarce. Instead, his children vied for Romney's attention.

Patrick, his 12-year-old son, came within 2 feet of crashing into Romney on roller blades. A daughter somersaulted in his direction, announcing her love for gymnastics. Where some politicians would have been patronizing, Romney carried on with the children with genuine interest.

The display compelled Christie to offer his support for Romney that evening without hesitation.

?We've seen politicians who don't know how to interact with children,? he said. ?What I saw that day from Mitt Romney you can't fake. What it told me was something I didn't know until that day: this is a really involved father and a doting grandfather.?

Some delegates filed out of the Innisbrook ballroom in Palm Harbor after the half hour speech wishing Christie would have shared the humanizing account when he had the nation's attention in a keynote address at the convention earlier this week.

Linda Ivell, a Polk County delegate, seemed energized by Christie's story and a session by Newt Gingrich that argued the economic benefits of expanding oil and gas production on public land. Republicans need to improve how they market their ideas, she said.

?This isn't politics,? she said. ?This is really about answers. (Voters) want a path and they want knowledge.?

Holding forth at the convention this week, Christie said Democrats want to ?whistle a happy tune while driving us off a fiscal cliff.? He continued drawing distinctions between the parties Thursday morning, highlighting the work done by Republican governors across the country (but not mentioning Gov. Rick Scott, whose mother was seated in the audience).

?You may not think that you're ready to change horses but you are,? he said, as if speaking to undecided voters instead of a roomful of GOP delegates. ?The reason you are is because of the power of our ideas and the changes they are producing across the country.?

Christie said he has made statements in New Jersey that have made constituents shake their heads, but said an occasional gaff is better than making voters guess where you stand.

?Our problems are too big to be playing charades,? he said. ?Our problems are too big to send smoke signals.?

Why Beetle Species Outnumber Tuataras

The tree of life does not branch evenly.

"Some groups, like beetles and flowering plants, contain nearly incomprehensible species diversity, but the overwhelming majority of groups contain far fewer species," writes a team of researchers online Tuesday (Aug. 29) in the journal PLoS Biology.

Groups such as tuataras, which are reptiles that live on New Zealand islands, have few species.

Scientists have blamed time for this discrepancy.

According to this theory: "All things being equal, older clades (groups) will have had more time for diversity to accumulate than younger clades," writes the team, led by Daniel Rabosky of?the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

To test this theory, they looked at the relationship between age and species richness across 1,397 major clades of plants, animals and fungi. Collectively, these groups account for more than 1.2 million species.

The theory did not stand up, they said.

"When we look across the tree of life, the age of the group tells us almost nothing about how many species we would expect to find. In most groups, it tells us nothing," said study researcher Michael Alfaro, of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in a statement.

As an alternative, Alfaro proposes the number of species that can emerge is limited by a particular "adaptive zone." So, the lineage of beetles, sharks or gingkoes each has a limit on how much they can diversify based on the competition they face and what they need to live. ?

When organisms emerge that can take advantage of a new adaptive zone, they will continue to diversify into new species until that zone has reached capacity, Alfaro said in a statement. "What's really driving things is how many times lineages evolve new innovations that move them into new adaptive zones."

Graham Slater, a National Science Foundation?funded postdoctoral researcher at UCLA, also contributed to the study.

Money and happiness | Aspen Daily News Online

Money can?t buy happiness? can be heard in contemporary music, positive psychology, and on local pulpits. However, recent research indicates that income is positively correlated with happiness. Research on larger groups also indicates that income may contribute to a state of well being at a national level. For example, in comparing the average life satisfaction of citizens across nations, wealth as indicated by gross national product (GNP), is a strong predictor of happiness. Thus, generally, the greater a nation?s GNP the more likely a nation?s citizens will report greater life satisfaction (i.e. happiness). This research makes sense in that financial stability improves satisfaction in life by providing more time with friends and family, freedom to pursue interests, and decreased financial worry.
?
Despite this interesting data, one must take the relationship with money and happiness with a grain of salt. In reality, the relationship with money and happiness is not clearly delineated. The impact of money on happiness is greatest for those with the least resources; as income increases, the contribution of money to happiness decreases. Eventually, the relationship between money and happiness is negligible as incomes rise. Thus, money may not be the most important with regard to maintaining long term happiness or mental well-being.
?
Additionally, extant research also suggests that one?s relationship with money can become problematic in that people with higher levels of materialism tend to be less happy than those who focus their energy around relational, mental, and spiritual fulfillment. Research also indicates that too much saving can decrease perceived quality of life. The key to happiness is to save enough for security and spend some money on activities and experiences that enhance well-being.
?
When we focus on money, we can become too focused on working harder and harder to earn income, which often leads to increased anxiety and decreased sense of satisfaction. Rather than focusing on money, a better key to well-being is to focus on increasing happiness contributors in one?s life. In fact, money plays a minimal role in happiness in comparison to factors such as: having a focus on meaningful goals, expressing gratitude, giving of one?s strengths, and simplifying one?s life to concentrate on those people and activities most meaningful to personal well-being.
?
Most importantly, our expectations for life, relationships, and financial well-being significantly impact wellness. The greater a person?s expectations, the more likely a person is to experience stress, anxiety, and depression. True wealth isn?t about money. True wealth comes from quality relationships, good health, a focus on others in addition to oneself, and continued self-improvement and growth. By focusing on aspects of life beyond money, true wealth and happiness can be realized.

Food Group Fiasco : BVWNews

August 29, 2012 ? Cheyenne Jones, reporter ?

With the new school year starting, BV West students return to eating the typical cafeteria food. Students prepare to numbly meander through the cafeteria selecting their favorite main course, sides, and drink. However, as we were sitting in class, most likely daydreaming, the announcements rudely stirred us out of our stupor and exclaimed the sudden change in our typical lunch routine. Different from previous years, we would now have to select three out of five of the food groups.

The new rule with the food groups only applies to those who buy a meal. A school lunch is only determined to be a meal if the main course falls under the category of what the school determines to be a ?healthy? food. This is ironic since everything the school serves is frozen processed food. In addition, the new rule about the food groups is ambiguous. Who can say that the tomato sauce drowning the whole grain pasta does not fall under the category of a vegetable? Not only is the new rule ambiguous it also ineffective too.

Although the school?s new lunch rule is aimed at creating a healthier BV West population, the rule only applies to those who purchase a school meal. So, if someone buys a pizza, which no longer falls under the category of a school meal, he or she is not required to fulfill the new food group rule. Thus, the new rule is ineffective. It creates enough hassle to elicit annoyance from the student population but leaves large enough loopholes for students escape the influence of the administration and continue their original ?unhealthy? meals.

Proponents for the change argue that with the rising obesity rate in the US a drastic revamp of school lunches is the answer. Although their intentions are not malicious it is not administrators? or the government?s right to interfere in students? lives in such a manner. ?It is the students? right to decide what food they consume. Besides, if students purchase the well-balanced meal at school with their three out of five food groups they could easily go home and fill up on cookies and an assortment of other junk food.

Ergo, if BV West truly wants to instill in the student body the importance of healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle more should be done to educate the students of the importance of being healthy. Although the importance of nutrition and exercise is emphasized in freshmen Gym and Health class sophomore year, when BV West students become juniors and seniors the importance of nutrition is no longer mentioned. Thus, if BV West wants to imprint in the students? minds the importance of being healthy classes should be taught during advisory about nutrition and exercise. This would be an improvement from being the typical social hour Advisory has become. Besides, once students are out of the protective cocoon of high school students will be faced with the unhealthy food choices and they will not have that lunch lady demanding that they go back and grab their serving of vegetables before they can check-out.

Kirby was arrested after the actor-rapper subdued him in his home early Aug. 22, breaking the 56-year-old's jaw, nose and ribs in the process. He was later charged with felony residential burglary and faces 38 years to life in prison if convicted due to his lengthy criminal history.

LL Cool J, whose real name is James Todd Smith, and his family were unharmed during the break-in, and nothing was apparently taken from their home. He stars in the CBS series "NCIS: Los Angeles."

A district attorney's spokeswoman says Kirby's bail was set at $1.1 million.

Renal denervation treats resistant hypertension in real world patient ...

Renal denervation successfully treats patients with resistant hypertension in real world patient populations, according to a study presented at ESC Congress 2012. The findings were presented by Dr Darren Mylotte from France.

Transcatheter renal denervation represents a novel therapy for treating patients with treatment resistant hypertension, a condition which greatly increases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke.

"The Symplicity Hypertension I and II studies have suggested that this procedure significantly lowers blood pressure in these patients with few remaining options in terms of treatment," said Dr Mylotte. "However, patients included in clinical trials are often highly selected, and therefore may not reflect the patient encountered by physicians on a day-to-day basis. As such, the results of these trials may not be applicable to less-selected patient populations."

In light of this potential problem, the investigators sought to evaluate the effect of transcatheter renal denervation in a group of patients with resistant hypertension in their own clinical practice at The Institut Cardiovasculaire de Paris Sud, Paris, France.

They intended to perform transcatheter renal denervation on 35 consecutive patients referred to the service with resistant hypertension. The study used the same definition as the Symplicity trials to define resistant hypertension (1).

Among these patients, 36.5% were female, 36.4% were diabetic, and 15.2% had kidney dysfunction. Baseline office blood pressure (BP) was 181.1?21.9 /100.8?16.8 mmHg, despite an average of 4.6?1.0 medications per patient. Successful bilateral sympathetic denervation was performed in 33 out of 35 patients (1 patient was not treated due to a stenosis of the renal artery; 1 patient had treatment on one side only, as multiple small renal arteries were found on the other side). No procedural complications occurred.

At 6-months follow-up, the average office BP reduction from baseline was 30.3?21.1/14.6?15.3 mmHg (P

"Transcatheter renal denervation is a safe and efficacious treatment, which results in significant reductions in blood pressure in real world patients with treatment resistant hypertension," said Dr Mylotte. "Although longer-term results are required, renal denervation should be considered for all patients with treatment resistant hypertension, as it is likely to lower their blood pressure and reduce their chances of myocardial infarction and stroke."

Weather HD now available on Android

Android Central

One of the more popular weather apps on iOS, Weather HD, has finally come to Android. It provides all of the usual weather data you'd want -- current temperature / humidity / precipitation / wind, 7-day forecasts and a few other customizable odds and ends. What's nice about Weather HD is the interface. It's the simplicity of gray and white text on a nicely animated background image, which changes with the current weather conditions, that really helps set this apart from some of the cluttered and busy weather apps. Unfortunately, Weather HD doesn't include a widget, though we'd expect it to soon if they want to stay competitive with the other popular weather apps out there.

Weather HD is available in the Google Play Store at the link above. It'll set you back 99 cents, or is free with advertisements.

Republicans to delay business at convention by one day

TAMPA (Reuters) - Republicans will delay the start of business at their national convention in Tampa by one day due to Tropical Storm Isaac, the Republican National Committee chairman said on Saturday.

Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement that the convention would convene on Monday as scheduled but then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon.

The convention is due to formally nominate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as presidential and vice presidential candidates to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in the November 6 election.

"Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention is going to convene on Monday August 27th and then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th," Priebus told reporters in a telephone briefing.

"The Republican convention is going to take place," he said, adding that party officials were working with Florida state officials and emergency management to make sure they ensure the safety of everyone attending the convention.

A representative from the Romney campaign said they would adjust times and try to fit in as many speakers as possible in three days instead of the planned four-day event.

The convention will bring 50,000 visitors to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, home to well over 4 million people. But local authorities say they can handle the crowds and the approaching storm.

Many attendees booked earlier flights to be in place before any bad weather. Hotels said they were ready to shift party schedules or move outdoor events indoors.

The last Republican convention, in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2008 was also delayed by a day due to a storm. That year, Hurricane Gustav hit the Louisiana coast as the convention was set to get under way.

The party, still reeling from criticism of Republican President George W. Bush's handling of devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, rushed to delay the meeting out of respect for Gustav's victims.

In Southwest, Worst-Case Fire Scenario Plays Out

Craig Allen, left, a research ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, and Jorge Castro, a visiting professor of ecology from Spain, survey a plateau ravaged during last year's Las Conchas fire in New Mexico. The megafire burned over 150,000 acres of forest.

Third of a five-part series

As the Earth's average temperature creeps upward, climate scientists have predicted record heat waves and droughts. That's what we've seen this summer in the U.S.

The question has become, are we now seeing the real damage climate change can do?

I drove though New Mexico's Santa Fe National Forest with ecologist Craig Allen, from the U.S. Geological Survey. Allen is energetic, restless and deeply worried about this forest. He has watched a triple combination of heat, drought and wildfire devastate this place over the past 15 years.

We stop by what once would've been a beautiful meadow full of Ponderosa pine ? a tall tree with cinnamon bark and branches at the top, loaded with pine needles. But the big valley is badly burned. There are no live Ponderosa pines.

"The shrubs have basically taken control of the site," Allen says.

Ecologists call this "type conversion." The forest turned to shrub land. Big wildfires did that.

Heat waves, droughts and fire are not unusual here: A 16th-century mega-drought pushed the Pueblo Indians out of these mountains. And the current drought, in fact, is only the eighth most severe in the past 1,000 years.

But scientists say something is different now. The weather pendulum that swings back and forth between hot and cold, wet and dry is swinging more toward the hot and dry side.

"What we have now is a gradual trend towards warmer temperatures," says Park Williams, an ecologist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. He says climate change is exaggerating the normal swings in weather.

"So each drought will be a little more intense, and each very good period will be a little less good for the foreseeable human future, it seems," he says.

Drought And The 'Sponge Effect'

Higher temperatures will mean more drought.

It works this way: Prolonged heat turns the atmosphere into a sort of dry sponge ? a sponge that sucks more and more moisture out of the ground and out of trees. Scientists call this "sponge effect" the atmosphere's "vapor pressure deficit." Williams says this year, that deficit has increased here by 50 percent.

"Thinking about a 50 percent increase in vapor pressure deficit is like thinking about the Southwestern United States being transplanted onto another planet," he says.

Williams says that deficit will get worse as average summer temperatures increase.

Williams and Allen work within the Bandelier National Monument in the Jemez Mountains. It's a national park. It's rainy season now, and a small river runs through the woods.

But the rain is deceiving. Less rainfall and more heat are changing the landscape. Allen says the current drought almost wiped out one of the park's iconic trees, the pinon, 10 years ago. The pinon gives the Southwest its signature peppery scent.

"This is a huge change almost overnight in an ecosystem. The dominant tree on this site wholesale died," Allen says. "More than 95 percent of the mature pinon in Bandelier died."

This wave of heat, drought and fire has swept over the Colorado Plateau ? a region of high mountain forests that stretch across Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado.

To make matters worse, the weakened trees are ever more vulnerable to bark beetles that now infest these forests.

Seeing 'The Worst Thing ... We Expected Would Happen'

Thomas Swetnam at the University of Arizona studies the forests of the Southwest. Like many ecologists, he says one reason forests are burning hotter now is because they're overgrown. For a century the U.S. Forest Service suppressed all fires, and now they're tinderboxes.

University of Arizona professor Tom Swetnam examines a tree sample at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research in Tucson, Ariz. Swetnam says forests are burning hotter because they are overgrown. Enlarge David Gilkey/NPR

David Gilkey/NPR

University of Arizona professor Tom Swetnam examines a tree sample at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research in Tucson, Ariz. Swetnam says forests are burning hotter because they are overgrown.

But Swetnam says climate change has made the situation much worse. And that's exactly what the computer models of climate change predicted.

"When you have predictions and the scientific understanding tells you this is likely what's coming, [and] then it starts to happen, the pieces, the dots are obviously connectable that it's very likely [we are] seeing the worst thing that we expected would happen," Swetnam says. "Warming is occurring and it's starting to take out our forests."

Back at Bandelier in New Mexico, Craig Allen's office sits deep in a canyon in the Jemez Mountains. He's watched four fires burn about 90 percent of the east side of the mountains in 16 years.

"For me, the really profound piece of this is the ability of the trees that have been growing for centuries on these hill slopes," he says. "Are they going to be able to survive even another 20, 30 years if the temperature increases?"

Inside, Allen's desk is surrounded with notebooks ? 30 years of his field notes here. But now, he says, the forests they describe will probably never look the same.

Romney hopes convention will help him win Florida

It is no coincidence Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney chose to hold his nominating convention in Florida, for the state could well decide the result of the November 6 election.

Home to 11 million registered voters, Florida is a key swing state and proved decisive in 2000 when Republican George W. Bush trumped Democrat Al Gore after a recount contested all the way to the US Supreme Court.

"Florida is the key state for the election. It's the largest swing state with 29 electoral votes," said Carol Weissert, a political scientist at Florida State University.

With a little over 10 weeks to go until election day, polls are split over whether President Barack Obama or Romney, a multi-millionaire businessman and former Massachusetts governor, holds the edge in the Sunshine State.

An August 15-21 Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS survey put Obama ahead by three percentage points, but a Rasmussen Reports poll on August 15 had Romney up by two. Both were within the margin of error.

Florida has a diverse mix of voters, making the state a complex election battleground.

Nearly 18 percent of the state's 19 million residents are above the age of 65, according to 2010 census figures. Senior citizens are usually reliable voters and have tended to tilt Republican.

More than three-quarters of Florida residents regard themselves as white, according to the census, although the state does have significant Hispanic and African American minorities.

For decades Florida Hispanics were typically Cuban Americans that overwhelmingly voted Republican.

But the latest generation has a more mixed voting record and a growing proportion of Florida's Hispanics are from Puerto Rico or of South American origin and more inclined to vote Democrat.

Obama won Florida by a slim majority in 2008 when the turnout of young people and Democrats was huge. "Obama needs to do it again to win in 2012," said Weissert.

And while experts say the president has a reasonable chance of being re-elected even if he loses Florida, the state is seen as make-or-break for his Republican challenger.

"It is very difficult to see how Romney can win without carrying Florida," said Larry Sabato, a political science professor who is the director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.

Florida "is very critical for both parties. For Republicans, they cannot win without winning Florida," agreed Susan McManus, a professor in the University of South Florida's political science department in Tampa.

No surprise then that Romney has chosen to be anointed next week in the Florida gulf coast city of Tampa.

At the August 27-30 event, plenty of time has been allotted for Florida personalities, including popular former governor Jeb Bush, present Governor Rick Scott and telegenic state Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a youthful Cuban American and a rising star in the Republican party, has been given the exalted role of introducing Romney on the final night of the convention.

American presidential elections are decided not by the overall popular vote but by adding up so-called electoral college votes, which are awarded on a state-by-state basis.

With 29, Florida is the swing state that has the largest number of electoral college votes up for grabs. California (55) and Texas (38) have more but the first is solidly Democrat and the second firmly Republican.

McManus said that with polls narrowing for Obama in other swing states such as North Carolina and Indiana, Florida was now becoming a must-win for both parties.

Sabato, however, disagreed.

"More likely Ohio or Virginia will be the key state, but you can play this game endlessly in August," he said. "No one knows."

One question that will impact your life, family and work | Some Wise ...

?Is it really that simple??

No, that isn?t the question I?m talking about, but the answer is, ?Yes, it is. However, it isn?t easy.?

flowers

I don?t think relationships are really all that complicated. Someone wise once said,

?Marriages don?t have issues. People have issues and they get married.?

I think relationships are simple, especially marriage. What they definitely are NOT is easy. Friendships, marriages and workplace relationships are easy. The situation gets dicey because people are involved.

People are not easy.

Often the most difficult person in any relationship is the one staring back at you in the mirror. I know I am. I?m selfish, short-tempered, overly sensitive, bitter, possessive and socially awkward. That is my nature.

How I choose to act is all on me. By the grace of God He guides my steps, blesses my family and gives me the ability to love sacrificially, but it?s still a choice.

I love my wife because I can?t help it. I see LK and I can?t help but smile. She walks into the room and it?s all I can do not to take her in my arms and start making out. I love her laugh and appreciate everything she does to make our house a home. But I can still be a big, selfish baby and I must choose to act against that nature.

?That?s sweet KC, but what?s this one question? You?re stalling bro.?

Fair enough, here is the question:

What can I do to help?

Imagine for a minute how you would feel if your spouse asked you this? Or your kid? What about a coworker?

Now transfer that feeling to your spouse, kid, coworker. How would they react if you asked them the same question. It?s scary to think about because you can?t ask that question with insincerity.

MEN: If you ask your wife what you can do to help and she points to the overflowing garbage can or that project you promised to finish 3 months ago you best be ready to follow through.

WOMEN: If you ask your husband what you can do to help and he asks for help with that project or a shoulder massage you?ve got to back up your offer.

MOMS/DADS: If you ask your kid(s) what you can do to help they may ask for some assistance with cleaning their room or if you can explain their homework.

This question creates an environment where we serve one another and support each other. Where needs are met and our selfish hearts are softened towards others. The focus shifts outwards to ?What can I do to help?? instead of inwards ?What can I get out of this??

Recently, I listened to Andy Stanley preach on the subject of mutual submission (a red warning light just started flashing in your brain and the alarm is blaring) and he talked about this question.

The scripture reference was Eph 5:21 where Paul is addressing the church.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

I highly recommend checking out the podcast of the sermon, but let me leave you with this challenge.

The question ?What can I do to help?? has a lot of power.

It could save your marriage.
It could strengthen your family.
It could improve your work.
It could change your life.

Asking it is the easy part. Following through is where the hard work begins.

Who do you need to ask this question to? What do you think their answer will be?

Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened slightly as it spun toward the Dominican Republic and Haiti, but seemed unlikely to gain enough steam early Friday to strike as a hurricane. The storm's failure to gain the kind of strength in the Caribbean that forecasters initially projected made it more likely that Isaac won't become a hurricane until it enters the Gulf of Mexico, said Eric Blake, a forecaster with U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. (AP Photo/Dieu Nalio Chery)

(AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened as it swirled toward an expected landfall on Haiti's southern peninsula Friday night, threatening the poor nation with punishing rains but unlikely to gain enough steam to strike as a hurricane.

Forecasters said the storm would likely stay below hurricane force until it reached the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, and they shifted its projected track back eastward and it remained a possible threat to Tampa, Florida, where the Republican National Convention starts Monday.

Government and international aid groups in Haiti's capital were prepared to evacuate several thousand people from settlement camps that sprang up in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. But the main threat appeared aimed at Les Cayes, a city of about 45,000 people on the southwestern coast that is prone to flooding during heavy rain.

Isaac was expected to dump up to eight to 12 inches (20 to 30 centimeters) of rain on the island of Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Haiti is heavily deforested and just a few hours of steady rain can trigger deadly mudslides.

"That kind of rain is going to cause some life-threatening flash floods and mudslides," said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami.

Isaac was centered about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south-southeast of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, Friday night, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph). It was moving west at 10 mph (17 kph). Tropical force winds extended nearly 200 miles (321 kilometers) from the storm's center.

Cuba declared a state of alert Friday for six eastern provinces, according to a Civil Defense announcement read on the afternoon news, and five central provinces were put on preliminary watch. Vacationers in tourist installations of those regions were evacuated.

"In the coming hours, people in areas at greatest risk of flooding will be transported to safe places," Radio Rebelde said.

In the southeastern coastal town of Siboney, Cuban medical and military personnel unloaded beds, oxygen tanks and mattresses at a makeshift clinic relocated uphill from its previous site close to the sea.

"We are moving the emergency room up here to keep it from getting soaked down there," Dr. Julia Echevarria said.

Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe urged people to avoid crossing rivers and to stay calm, saying "panic creates more problems." He said the government had set aside about $50,000 in emergency funds and had buses and 32 boats on standby for evacuations.

About 400,000 people remain in settlement camps comprised of shacks and tarps in the wake of Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake.

In Port-au-Prince, people went to work as usual Friday, but commercial banks closed at noon and some residents took precautions as the sky darkened, rain fell and the wind picked up.

"Just in case this gets very bad ? the sky is turning gray ? I'm making sure we have enough food in the house," said 25-year-old Joanne Dorville as she carried home rice, sardines, black beans and cooking oil that she had purchased in a street market.

Haitian authorities and aid workers from the International Organization for Migration and the Haitian Red Cross had planned to evacuate as many as 8,000 people from a tent camp at the edge of the capital but few accepted. Two school buses that were supposed to shuttle the people to temporary shelters drove away empty.

"If I leave for a shelter, by the time I come back, everything I have will be gone," said Charles Delizaire, a 39-year-old resident of the settlement named Marassa.

More than a hundred people were at a shelter in a school that President Michel Martelly toured along with Lamothe, the prime minister. Martelly greeted mothers and their children, but after the visit some people began to leave.

"They dragged me from the camp and brought me here," 38-year-old Marlene Charles, thirsty and hungry, said about the aid groups. "There's no way I'm going to spend the night here."

So far, Isaac itself had caused no reported injuries or deaths, but police in Puerto Rico said a 75-year-old woman died near the capital of San Juan on Wednesday when she fell off a balcony while preparing for the storm.

In the Dominican Republic, authorities evacuated people from low-lying areas but, as in Haiti, they encountered resistance. Still, authorities said they evacuated nearly 2,900 people. The majority were transferred to the homes of relatives while about 300 were sent to government shelters.

Flooding was reported in Santo Domingo and Santiago but no reports of injuries.

Local forecasters said they expected the storm to dump up to 12 inches (31 centimeters) of rain through Saturday, causing possible flooding and landslides.

Commercial airlines, including American Airlines, canceled flights to and from the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Puerto Rico.

Organizers of next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa said they were working closely with state and federal authorities on monitoring storm as they prepared for the arrival of 70,000 delegates, journalists and protesters, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott said there were no plans to cancel the convention.

Out in the eastern Atlantic, former Tropical Storm Joyce degenerated into a broad low pressure system Friday and posed no threat to land.
