Root Fungus Stores a Surprising Amount of the Carbon Sequestered in Soil

Falling leaves and branches are important, but roots and their fungi win out

A forest floor can store lots of atmospheric carbon, helping to limit global warming that results from carbon dioxide emissions. Most of that storage, scientists have thought, is found in tree leaves and branches that absorb carbon, eventually fall to the ground and slowly decay into soil. A new study in Sweden, however, indicates that 50 to 70 percent of the carbon bound in soil is actually from tree roots and the fungi that grow on them.

This surprising insight comes from Karina Clemmensen at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and colleagues who studied boreal forests on 30 islands in northern Swedish lakes. The forests were consumed by different numbers of fires over the past 5,000 years, providing a broad mix of soil compositions on different forest floors. The comparison revealed that the amount of carbon stored in soil was linked to mycorrhizal fungi that grow along tree-root systems and help to keep them healthy.

?These fungi live in symbiosis with plant roots and transport carbon from plant photosynthesis directly into the soil,? Clemmensen wrote in response to e-mail questions. ?The prevailing dogma had been that aboveground plant litter (dead needles and wood) is the principal source of carbon storage in boreal forest soils,? she explained. But her results show that ?a large proportion of the carbon stored in boreal forests instead enters the soil from beneath, via roots and their associated mycorrhizal fungi.?

Boreal forest soils are a major sink, holding 16 percent of all carbon sequestered in soils worldwide, according to a paper by Clemmensen?s team published March 29 in Science. The most immediate implication of the finding is that climate models should be revised to take into account the role that the fungi play. Revised models, Clemmensen wrote, would give more precise predictions of how forest management practices (such as thinning of trees) and environmental changes could influence carbon storage.

More research is also needed to determine if more older trees (so-called old-growth forests) worldwide would mean increased storage. As trees age, they allocate less carbon to root fungi, yet residues from old, dead fungi hang on to carbon more tightly than do dead needles and wood in the soil. Other studies, however, suggest that mycorrhizal fungi decompose organic matter in the soil, thereby releasing carbon. How these factors interact to form stable soil ?is a very interesting and intriguing question that we do not yet have the answer to,? Clemmensen wrote. What is clear is that mycorrhizal fungi are much more important to carbon sequestration than anyone had realized.

Cheap Prescription Drug Secrets Revealed By Consumer Group

A little research can save you a lot of cash on prescription drugs, according to a secret shopping study by Consumer Reports.

The magazine called more than 200 pharmacies across the country to request retail prices for five best-selling drugs:?The diabetes drug Actos; the antidepressant Lexapro;?the cholesterol-lowering pill Lipitor;?the blood thinner Plavix; and?the asthma treatment,Singulair; all of which are available as generics.

Depending on the pharmacy, costs varied by as much as $749 for a month?s supply of all five drugs.

?A consumer can?t assume that the price of their prescription medications is set in stone,? Lisa Gill, prescription drugs editor for Consumer Reports, said in a statement.

A person without insurance could pay as much as $150 a month for generic Lipitor at CVS, compared to just $17 at Costco, the study found.

?Big-box stores such as Costco and Walmart use the pharmacy as a traffic builder for their stores, whereas traditional chain stores, such as CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens, make the majority of their revenue and profits from the pharmacy,? Stephen Schondelmeyer, a professor of pharmacy economics at the University of Minnesota, wrote in the report.

A spokesman for CVS took issue with the study, telling ABCNews.com in an email that ?pricing surveys do not accurately reflect what most pharmacy customers pay for their prescriptions given various value, discount and third-party insurance programs.?

Independent pharmacies had some good deals, too. But their prices varied widely from $131 to $1,073 for all five drugs.

?One of the big takeaways is that you have to ask for the best price and see if your pharmacist will work with you. Especially for the independent pharmacies, if they want to retain your business and loyalty, they will help you get the best price,? Gill said.

Click here to read the report. And read on for more tips for saving money at the pharmacy:

Go With Generics

Choosing a generic instead of its brand-name relative can save you thousands of dollars a year, according to Gill.

?If your doctor prescribes Lipitor, you may be taking it for the rest of your life.??So it can really pay to shop around,? she said.??Talk to your doctor about lower cost alternatives in the same class of drug. And make sure you have that talk when your doctor is about ready to write the prescription.??Once you?re taking a drug and tolerating it well, your doctor might be less inclined to try alternatives.?

Aim Low

Shoppers?weren?t?always given the lowest price, Consumer Reports found. It never hurts to ask the pharmacist for a better deal.

Ditch the City

Some urban pharmacies had higher prices than rural ones, Consumer Reports found.?A month?s supply of generic Actos at a pharmacy in?Raleigh,?N.C., cost $203 compared to $37 outside the city.

Load Up

Some pharmacies offer discounts on a three-month supply, so ask for a 90-day refill.

Do Your Homework

Big-box drugstores and pharmacy chains offer discount generic-drug programs, which can land you some generics for as little as $4 a month, Consumer Reports found.?Just make sure to check the fine print.

Termites are the 'fairies' behind weird desert rings

It seems the culprit behind the mysterious "fairy circles" of the Namib desert has been under our noses all along.

The fairy circles are discs of barren sand several metres across, surrounded by lush grasses that stand out against the sparse vegetation. Since the 1960s, theories about their origin have been raised and quickly shot down. A study in 2004 seemed to rule out the three leading theories: radioactive soil, toxic debris left by plants, and termites.

But perhaps the researchers didn't look hard enough. When Norbert J?rgens of the University of Hamburg in Germany examined hundreds of fairy circles in over 2000 kilometres of the Namib desert in southern Africa, he found a species of sand termite, Psammotermes allocerus, was the only organism consistently present.

J?rgen observed the insects eating grass roots, killing plants before they could sprout through the soil. With no foliage for water to transpire from, the water is retained in the ground beneath the patches, helping the termites survive the dry conditions. Their burrows make the soil more porous, allowing rainwater to percolate down to the cooler, deeper sand, again reducing the amount of water lost from the surface.

The extra water in the soil means that grasses spring up at the boundary of the insects' circular foraging area, attracting other life. "They are turning desert into grassland inhabited by numerous plant and animal species," says J?rgens.

"This is an amazing phenomenon" but unsurprising, says Nathan Lo from the University of Sydney. In arid regions of northern Australia, termites build mounds that trap nutrients, and an ecosystem develops around them. The circles are "like flattened termite mounds", he says.

But not everyone is convinced. Walter Tschinkel, a biologist from Florida State University in Tallahassee who has previously published work on fairy circles, suspects J?rgens is confusing correlation with causation. "It is more plausible that the grass died of other causes and was then consumed by termites," he says.

Lo disagrees, pointing to photographs J?rgens took showing the termites nesting in the roots of plants that are still alive. "This is about as good as you can get," he says. "It's very strong evidence."

J?rgens says he cannot exclude the possibility that "there could still be an unknown invisible bacterium, fungus or fairy", but so far none has shown itself.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shaved most of its early losses. JPMorgan led the blue-chip laggards, while Intel gained. The Dow was down as much as 120 points earlier before recovering.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq erased most of their losses to close narrowly mixed. The S&P has zigzagged between gains and losses for the last seven sessions.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded near.

Major averages ended near their best ever levels on Tuesday, with the Dow posting a new high and S&P 500 finishing less than 2 points from its closing peak.

In Europe, political deadlock continued in Italy as the country's main leadership candidate Pier Luigi's Bersani reportedly said that only an "insane person" would want to govern the nation now, adding that Italy is "in a mess and faces a difficult year ahead."

Bersani made the remark after the anti-establishment "Five Star Movement" party headed by comedian Beppe Grillo again refused to form a coalition government with Bersani, thwarting his latest attempts to form a governing alliance.

A political stalemate since its inconclusive elections in late February has spiked concerns over how the country will handle its growing debt problems. Italy paid more to borrow over five years than it has since October at its latest auction, indicating worries over its financial situation.

The euro extended its losses below $1.28 against the U.S. greenback, its lowest level since late November.

Elsewhere in Europe, Cyprus is finalizing financial control measures to prevent a run on its banks, which have been shut for a week since the country agreed to a conditional 10 billion euro ($12.8 billion) bailout from international lenders. Cypriots have been lining up to withdraw cash from ATMs, with limits at 100 euros a day for some banks.

"Banks will open on Thursday ... We will look at the best way to limit the possibility of large sums of money leaving, and not imposing punitive conditions on the economy, businesses and individuals," Cypriot Finance Minister Michael Sarris said in an interview on Cypriot television.

"Cyprus is a reason to remind investors that Europe is a source of risk, but I'm not sure Cyprus itself is going to be enough [for a market pullback from the recent run-up]," said Thomas Lee, chief U.S. equity strategist at JPMorgan. "The big picture still points to a major secular bull market being underway, with at least another four years left, led by durable goods."

Comcast edged higher after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the cable company in an antitrust case over how much the company charged subscribers. (Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal.)

Wal-Mart declined after the world's largest retailer said that probes into alleged foreign bribery at its stores are likely to result in a financial loss. Separately, the company said it would start using stores to get Internet orders to shoppers faster, amid growing competition from online rivals such as Amazon.com.

Boeing edged lower as its 787 Dreamliners face a temporary ban on some of the transocean flights, which would be a costly new challenge for the company.

Cliffs Natural Resources plunged to lead the S&P 500 laggards after Morgan Stanley downgraded the iron ore and metallurgical coal producer to "underweight" from "equal-weight." Rivals Alpha Natural Resources and Peabody Energy also traded lower.

Mattress Firm soared more than 10 percent after the mattress maker provided solid guidance for fiscal 2013. In addition, Raymond James upgraded the company to "outperform" from "market perform." Other mattress companies bounced higher, including Tempur-Pedic and Select Comfort.

Weekly mortgage applications rebounded last week as interest rates pulled back for the first time in three weeks, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Paychex and Red Hat are among notable companies scheduled to report earnings after the closing bell.

Earlier, Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren supported the central bank's asset purchase program, saying it is having the desired impact of speeding up the pace of the recovery and should be continued through the end of the year. Meanwhile, Cleveland Fed President Sandra Pianalto said the Federal Reserve should consider tapering off the pace of its bond-buying stimulus plan if the U.S. economy continues to show signs of improvement.

And Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota said the Fed should ease monetary policy further to bring the unemployment rate down at a faster rate. Kocherlakota expects the jobless rate to be close to 7 percent by the end of 2014, and forecasts growth around 2.5 percent this year and 3 percent next year.

Treasury prices held their gains after the government auctioned $35 billion in 5-year notes at a high yield of 0.760 percent. The bid-to-cover ratio, an indicator of demand, was 2.73.

Mali secular rebels appoint administrator in Kidal

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) ? A secular rebel group seeking independence in northern Mali said late Wednesday it has appointed a civil administrator for the region of Kidal, signaling it is retaking control of the government there as French forces battle radical Islamic fighters.

The National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad, or NMLA, has been reasserting its presence in Kidal since the French-led intervention forced many of the extremists into the surrounding desert.

Mohamed Aly Ag Al Bessati was chosen Tuesday for the position, according to NMLA representative Moussa Ag Assarid.

"Today our priority is to protect people and property," he said. "These people need an administration to better lead activities and regain daily life."

The secular rebels have said they are willing to work with the French forces but not Malian troops, whom they accuse of committing reprisals against the lighter-skinned Tuaregs and Arabs.

"We can't entrust our destiny to any army that executes our families," Assarid said.

By comparison, Malian soldiers have bolstered the French presence in the northern cities of Gao and Timbuktu that also had been overrun by the radical Islamic fighters.

The Tuareg separatists who make up the NMLA have long sought independence from Mali, and their rebellion last year triggered a March coup in the distant capital.

In the aftermath, the Tuaregs and Islamic extremists had both made rapid advances across northern Mali and the poorly armed Malian soldiers fled.

For several months, the Islamic extremists controlling northern Mali coexisted with the secular Tuareg rebels who want their own state.

The black flag of the extremists fluttered alongside the multi-colored one of the secular rebels, each occupying different areas of the towns.

In late May 2012, the two sides attempted to sign a deal, agreeing to create an independent Islamic state called Azawad.

The agreement between the bon vivant Tuareg rebels and the Taliban-inspired extremists seemed doomed from the start. It fell apart days later. By June, the Islamic extremists had chased the secular rebels out of northern Mali's main cities.

However, a French-led military operation launched in mid-January forced the radical Islamists to flee northern Mali's major towns.

Investigators: Adam Lanza surrounded by weapons at home; attack took less than 5 minutes

Search warrants and other documents released by prosecutors show that shooter Adam Lanza fired 154 bullets from his rifle in less than five minutes. NBC News' Michael Isikoff has more.

By Michael Isikoff, Tom Winter and Erin McClam, NBC News

Adam Lanza left a home stuffed with weaponry and carried out the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in a 154-bullet barrage that took less than five minutes, investigators said Thursday in the first detailed account of his surroundings and troubled state of mind.

Search warrants from the second-worst school shooting in American history revealed that the home Lanza shared with his mother in Newtown, Conn., was a veritable arsenal: Authorities found at least nine knives, three Samurai swords, two rifles, 1,600 rounds of ammunition and a 7-foot, wood-handled pole with a blade on one side and a spear on the other.

Authorities also recovered a certificate in Lanza?s name from the National Rifle Association, seven of his journals, drawings that he made and books from the house, including books on living with mental illness.

The warrants offered a thorough look at the environment in which Lanza lived before he shot his mother, Nancy, to death and drove to Sandy Hook on the morning of Dec. 14. Twenty first-graders and six teachers and staff were killed before Lanza shot himself to death with the 155th bullet.

An FBI report based on interviews with people who knew him said that Lanza rarely left home, considered himself a shut-in and was an avid gamer who played ?Call of Duty,? a first-person shooter game. Lanza considered the elementary school his ?life,? the papers said.

Among other items seized from the home were a holiday card containing a check from his mother to buy a firearm, an article from The New York Times about a 2008 school shooting at Northern Illinois University and three photographs of what appeared to be a dead person covered with plastic and blood.

Full list of Lanza arsenal as detailed in search warrants

The books included ?Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger?s? and ?Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Mind of an Autistic Savant.?

At the school, Lanza fired the 154 rounds from a Bushmaster .223-model rifle and the final bullet from a Glock 10mm handgun to take his own life, said Stephen Sedensky, the chief prosecutor investigating the shooting. Police recovered 10 30-round magazines for the Bushmaster that Lanza took to the school. Three of the magazines had a full 30 rounds still in them.

Among school shootings in the United States, the death toll from Newtown is second only to the 32 people killed at Virginia Tech in 2007.

The attack touched off a nationwide debate about gun control. The fate of proposed changes to national gun laws, including expanded background checks and limits on high-capacity magazines, remains unclear.

President Barack Obama spoke Thursday at the White House to make the case again for tougher gun laws. He appeared with parents of Sandy Hook victims and of other gun crimes but did not specifically reference the newly released Newtown warrants.

?The entire country was shocked,? the president said. ?And the entire country pledged that we would do something about it and this time would be different. Shame on us if we?ve forgotten. I haven?t forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we?ve forgotten.?

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy, citing the warrants, also called for stricter gun laws.

?We knew that these weapons were legally purchased under our current laws,? Malloy said. ?I don?t know what more we can need to know before we take decisive action to prevent gun violence. The time to act is now.?

The warrants spelled out a vast inventory of weapons and other gun paraphernalia recovered from the Lanza home.

Among the items found were paper targets, gun manuals, earplugs, holsters, almost 40 types of ammunition, nine types of magazines, a bayonet, knives with blades as long as a foot and Samurai swords with blades as long as 2 feet 4 inches.

Authorities also found a starter?s pistol, a BB gun, an NRA guide to pistol shooting and an NRA certificate in Nancy Lanza?s name.

In a statement, the NRA said it had no record of a ?member relationship? for the Lanzas, nor for someone with the same last name and their first initials.

?Reporting to the contrary is reckless, false and defamatory,? the statement said.

On Wednesday, a judge granted a request from prosecutors to withhold some information in the records, including a witness name, credit card information, telephone numbers and serial numbers.

Besides the Bushmaster and the Glock, authorities found a Sig-Sauer 9mm semiautomatic pistol in the school. In the car outside, police found a shotgun.

All those weapons were legally owned by the mother, authorities have said. Enough public blame and anger has been directed at her that she was left out of many of the memorials and shrines to the Newtown victims.

There have been reports that Lanza was obsessed with other mass killers, including Anders Breivik, who killed 77 people in a shooting and bomb attack in Norway two years ago.

A law enforcement official told NBC News last month that Lanza had collected material on previous mass shootings, although the source said there was no indication that it played a role in the school massacre.

Police told NBC News in February that investigators were still a long way from determining Lanza?s motive. Police said then that they hoped to have a report on the shooting finished by June.

Venus vortices go for chaotic multi-storey strolls around the poles

Mar. 24, 2013 ? A detailed study of Venus' South Polar Vortex shows a much more chaotic and unpredictable cyclone than previously thought. The analysis reveals that the center of rotation of the vortex wanders around the pole differently at different altitude levels in the clouds of Venus. In its stroll around the Pole, in layers separated by 20 km, the vortex experiences unpredictable changes in its morphology.

The results of this study are published online in Nature Geoscience today.

The study, entitled 'A chaotic long-lived vortex at the southern pole of Venus', used infrared images from VIRTIS instrument onboard the European Space Agency's Venus Express spacecraft. VIRTIS provides spectral images at different levels of the atmosphere and allows the observation of the lower and upper clouds of Venus.

Atmospheric vortices are common in the atmospheres of different planets of the Solar System, although they have different behaviors. Venus is a planet similar to Earth in size, but very different in other aspects. It rotates slowly around its axis, with a day on Venus lasting 243 Earth-days, and it spins in the opposite direction to Earth. Its dense carbon dioxide atmosphere, with surface pressures of 90 times that of Earth, causes a runaway greenhouse effect that raises the surface temperatures up to 450?C. Between 45 and 70km above the surface there is a dense layer of sulfuric acid clouds that completely covers the planet and moves at speeds of 360km/h in a phenomenon named superrotation, where the atmosphere rotates much faster than the surface of the planet. The origin of this effect is still unknown.

At the poles of Venus, the atmospheric circulation forms intense and permanent vortices that change shape and size on a daily basis. In the new analysis published today, researchers report that the winds in the vortex, which were tracked by studying images obtained by the Venus Express orbiter, change chaotically from day-to-day. This unpredictable nature of the Venus polar vortices make them different from polar vortices found on other planets, like Earth or Saturn, which are much more stable and predictable.

The large-scale cyclone extends vertically in Venus' atmosphere over more than 20 kilometers, through a region of highly turbulent, permanent clouds. However, the centers of rotation at two different altitude levels (42 and 62 km above the surface) are not aligned and both wander around the south pole of the planet with no established pattern at velocities of up to 55km/h. The study also finds that even when averaged cross-winds are roughly the same at both altitudes, there is still a strong vertical gradient, with winds increasing by as much as 3km/h for every kilometer of height and leading to possible atmospheric instabilities.

The vortices are fed by the atmospheric superrotation and are trapped in polar regions by a wide, shallow collar of cold air in subpolar latitudes. The eye at the centre of the vortex covers an average area of 2200 kilometres by 1400 kilometres. Despite several years of observations, it is not possible to explain why the vortex is variable enough to alter its shape in just one day, or remain stable for weeks. Thus, along with the origin of the superrotation of the atmosphere, identification of a mysterious source of ultraviolet absorption in the clouds, Venus polar vortices are one of the great mysteries of our twin planet. This study will help for a more precise explanation of the vortex and its relationship with the atmospheric superrotation.

(AP) ? Politicians in Cyprus were racing Saturday to complete an alternative plan raising funds necessary for the country to qualify for an international bailout, with a potential bankruptcy just three days away.

Cyprus has been told it must raise 5.8 billion euros ($7.5 billion) in order to secure 10 billion euros in rescue loans from other European countries that use the single currency, and from the International Monetary Fund. The country's lawmakers soundly rejected an unpopular initial plan that would have seized up to 10 percent of people's bank accounts, and is now seeking a way to raise the desperately needed money.

Finance Minister Michalis Sarris said it was unclear when new legislation raising funds would be completed and put to a vote in Parliament, but that it could be as early as Saturday night.

Nicosia made a significant step towards cementing a new plan Friday night, when its lawmakers approved nine bills, including three crucial ones that will restructure ailing banks, restrict financial transactions in emergencies and set up a "solidarity fund" for contributions.

Time is running out fast. The European Central Bank has said it will stop providing emergency funding to Cyprus' banks after Monday if no new plan is in place. Without ECB's support, Cypriot banks would collapse on Tuesday, pushing the country toward bankruptcy and a potential exit from the 17-nation eurozone.

Representatives of the IMF, ECB and European Commission ? collectively known as the troika ? were meeting with officials in the Finance Ministry throughout the morning, negotiating several new laws, including a crucial bill that would impose some form of a tax on bank deposits. The percentages and where the tax would apply are unclear, but the deputy head of the DISY governing party, Averof Neophytou, said in Parliament Friday it could be less than 1 percent on all deposits.

Troika consent is essential as they will determine whether the plan that the Cypriots come up with would meet the requirements for the bailout before it is presented to the eurozone finance ministers for final approval.

A eurogroup meeting of the finance ministers is expected to be held in Brussels over the weekend, and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades was also to fly there, potentially as early as Saturday.

Congolese warlord flown out of Rwanda from U.S. mission

By Jenny Clover

KIGALI (Reuters) - A Congolese warlord accused of war crimes charges was flown out of Rwanda bound for the International Criminal Court in the Hague on Friday, four days after he surrendered to the U.S. Embassy in Kigali, the Rwandan foreign minister said,

"Bosco Ntaganda has just taken off from Kigali in custody of ICC officials following cooperation between Rwanda, US and Dutch governments," Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said on Twitter.

The International Criminal Court confirmed he was on his way to the Netherlands. It would soon set a date for his first appearance in court to confirm his identity, it said in a statement.

A Reuters witness earlier saw a blacked-out U.S. Embassy vehicle under police escort drive along the perimeter of Kigali's international airport. Shortly after, a private jet took off.

Ntaganda, a rebel commander nicknamed "the Terminator", walked off the street and gave himself up to the U.S. Embassy on Monday after a 15-year career that spanned a series of Rwandan-backed rebellions in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

He asked to be moved to the ICC where he faces charges of recruiting child soldiers, murder, ethnic persecution, sexual slavery and rape during the 2002-3 conflict in northeastern Congo's gold mining Ituri district.

"Bosco's arrest won't bring peace to the eastern Congo, but Bosco's arrest does spell a victory in the battle against impunity and the dismantling to one of the barriers to a peace process in the country," Jason Stearns of the Rift Valley Institute wrote on Friday.

Reports: Kurdish rebels to heed call for peace

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A senior Kurdish politician said Friday that the Kurdish rebels' armed struggle against Turkey was "99 percent over," a day after the rebel leader called for a cease-fire and retreat and the insurgents gave a positive response.

Imprisoned Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, who is engaged in talks with Turkish officials to end a nearly 30-year-old conflict, appealed to his fighters on Thursday to cease hostilities, a major step toward ending one of the world's bloodiest insurgencies. His message was read by Kurdish legislators at a spring festival attended by hundreds of thousands of Kurds.

Rebel commander Murat Karayilan has indicated that guerrillas of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, would heed the call, according to Radikal newspaper and the pro-Kurdish Firat News website.

"Everyone should know that the PKK is prepared for both peace and war," Firat News, which is close to the rebels, quoted Karayilan as saying. "On this basis we will, with determination, put into practice (the terms) of the process which was started" by Ocalan.

Karayilan has been leading the PKK from bases in northern Iraq since Ocalan's capture in 1999.

Selahattin Demirtas, the leader of Turkey's pro-Kurdish party, said Ocalan's message signaled that the armed struggle was almost over. Demirtas said, however, that the government needed to set up an independent committee that would ensure the safe withdrawal of several thousand rebels from Turkey's territory.

"Ninety-nine percent of the armed struggle linked to the Kurdish issue is over," Demirtas said. "The other one percent is up to the government."

The Kurds are seeking guarantees that the rebels would not be attacked by Turkish security forces during the pull-out.

The PKK, considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, has been fighting for autonomy and greater rights for Kurds in Turkey. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984. Turkey announced in December that it was talking to Ocalan with the aim of persuading the PKK to disarm.

The Turkish government reacted cautiously to Ocalan's call for peace, saying it was a positive development but that Ankara wanted to see whether it would be implemented by the rebels. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkish security forces would cease operations against the rebels after the PKK fighters withdraw.

Kurdish rebels have declared cease-fires in the past, but these were ignored by the state, which had vowed to fight the PKK until the end. Erdogan's government has admitted to having held failed, secret talks with the PKK in past years, but this latest attempt ? held more publicly and with Ocalan's greater participation ? has raised hopes for a successful settlement.

On Friday, Erdogan said he hoped the initiative would bring lasting peace to Turkey.

"Today is the day for the guns to be buried, for the bloodshed to stop and for the tears to be wiped away," he said. "We have gone through very painful days. We don't want our children to go through the same."

Iraq War at 10: for families of wounded, a mounting cost

Some 32,000 wounded Iraq War veterans face long delays for care at the Veterans Administration, and even less is known about the strains on some 1 million family caregivers.?

Family, friends, and fellow veterans release red, white, and blue balloons at a memorial service in Sayre, Pa., for Army Cpl. Josh Perry, who died a year ago after tours as an MP in Korea and Iraq. He struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The 10-year anniversary of America?s war in Iraq came and went with little fanfare this week, but in homes across the country, veterans ? and the family members who care for them ? continue to struggle mightily with the wounds of battle.

Two new studies highlight their plight. On a Friday afternoon this month, the Army quietly released?a Pentagon Inspector General?s report which found ?non-compliance? on the part of the Army in processing soldiers? disability claims.

The report issued a further rebuke, noting that the method for filing disability claims is ?increasing the workload and confusion for all participants and leaders concerned.??

That navigating the veterans? disabilities claims process is confusing has long been known. The problem, veterans advocates say, is that it is not appreciably improving for the 32,000 troops who were wounded in the war.?

A report released this month from the Center for Investigative Reporting, ?The War Comes Home: Washington?s Battle Against America?s Veterans,? finds that some 600,000 claims of wounded veterans from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam are backlogged as service members await an answer from the Department of Veterans Affairs.?

By way of illustration, the ?excessive? stacks of paper and claims folders piled around the offices of a VA regional office in Winston-Salem, N.C., for example, were so great that it ?appeared to have the potential to compromise the [structural] integrity of the building,? according to an August 2012 report from the VA?s Office of the Inspector General.

Indeed, these heaps of paper ??an estimated 37,000 claims folders stored on top of file cabinets ??not only led to a predictable ?increased risk of loss or misfiling,? but they also exceeded the load-bearing capacity of the building by 39 pounds per square foot, according to the IG report.?

Many of these claims awaiting response are made by family members and spouses requesting help caring for some of these wounded returning from war, says Terri Tanielian, lead author of a RAND Corp. report on military caregivers released earlier this month.?

Indeed, these spouses and ??in the case of unmarried troops ??parents who care for troops returning from war ?often toil long hours with little support, putting them at risk for physical, emotional, and financial harm,? according to the report, which estimates that there are as many as one million such caregivers throughout the United States.

?These are the people that give the help with dressing, feeding, bathing, toileting these returning veterans,? says Ms. Tanielian says.?

The role that these military caregivers play ?can place stress and burdens on individual caregivers so much that they experience deteriorations of their own,? often in the form of ?higher rates of emotional stress and anxiety,? Tanielian adds.

They grapple with concerns about income loss, since many of them have to reduce the number of hours that they can work outside the home, or leave the workforce altogether, she notes. ?The set of burdens caregivers take on as a result of spending time in their caregiving role can accumulate and cascade.?

The problem, the RAND report warns, is that there is ?no national strategy? for supporting these ad hoc caregivers, who are often younger women with small children at home.?

What?s more, beyond those two key details, she adds, ?little is known about them.?

That needs to change, she adds. ?If we?re going to make sure that veterans can have a successful reintegration after they return from war, we need to tend to the needs of the caregivers, too.?

(AP) ? The flu season is winding down, and it has killed 105 children so far ? about the average toll.

The season started about a month earlier than usual, sparking concerns it might turn into the worst in a decade. It ended up being very hard on the elderly, but was moderately severe overall, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Six of the pediatric deaths were reported in the last week, and it's possible there will be more, said the CDC's Dr. Michael Jhung said Friday.

Roughly 100 children die in an average flu season. One exception was the swine flu pandemic of 2009-2010, when 348 children died.

The CDC recommends that all children ages 6 months and older be vaccinated against flu each season, though only about half get a flu shot or nasal spray.

All but four of the children who died were old enough to be vaccinated, but 90 percent of them did not get vaccinated, CDC officials said.

This year's vaccine was considered effective in children, though it didn't work very well in older people. And the dominant flu strain early in the season was one that tends to cause more severe illness.

The government only does a national flu death count for children. But it does track hospitalization rates for people 65 and older, and those statistics have been grim.

In that group, 177 out of every 100,000 were hospitalized with flu-related illness in the past several months. That's more than 2 1/2 times higher than any other recent season.

This flu season started in early December, a month earlier than usual, and peaked by the end of year. Since then, flu reports have been dropping off throughout the country.

"We appear to be getting close to the end of flu season," Jhung said.

If the US markets are considered the "safe haven" amidst all the recent EU turmoil, then why isn't the US Dollar Index skyrocketing? (Mr. Market has some foresight.)

And if the global economy is in "recovery", then why is the Baltic Dry Index for shipping rates back in the dumpster? (JWR's Comment: Sounds like more like a "Lohan" recovery to me, to wit: she's checked into rehab, but there is no willingness to actually change.)

Robert Redford in Talks for Captain America: The Winter Soldier

robert-redford-captain-america-2-sequel

Here?s your WTF story of the week: Robert Redford may be starring in a Marvel movie.? Reports have surfaced that Redford is in talks to join the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a ?senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D.?? This is a major get for Marvel, as Redford has relegated himself to acting solely in smaller indie fare or his own directorial projects for the past few years, with his last starring role in a ?Hollywood? film that he didn?t direct being Tony Scott?s 2001 thriller Spy Game.? Given that Kevin Feige recently described The Winter Soldier as a ?political thriller,? Redford should fit right in with the S.H.I.E.L.D. crew. Hit the jump for more, including the possibility of Redford popping up in other Marvel movies.

robert-redford-captain-america-the-winter-soldierAs S.H.I.E.L.D. has a presence in nearly all of Marvel?s films, Deadline notes that Redford is also likely to pop up in films other than The Winter Soldier.? My initial thinking is that this might be laying the groundwork for Redford?s S.H.I.E.L.D. character to have a significant role in The Avengers 2, but that?s purely conjecture on my part.? It?s no secret that Marvel likes to lock down their actors into multi-film contracts, but one assumes a deal with the Robert Redford is a tad different.? It would be kind of great to see the ?Sundance Kid? pop up in Guardians of the Galaxy, though.

Production on The Winter Soldier is expected to get underway imminently, with Chris Evans returning as the titular Cap flanked by newcomers Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Frank Grillo (The Grey) as Crossbones, and Emily VanCamp (Revenge) as the film?s female lead.? Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo?will direct, and?Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in 3D on April 4, 2014.

Official: NY tax breaks would apply to 'Tonight'

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? If New York isn't trying hard to lure "The Tonight Show" back to Manhattan, it's doing a pretty good impression.

A Cuomo administration official said Thursday that New York is trying to lure TV shows from California with a proposed tax credit program and the "Tonight" show would qualify if it decides to move back to Manhattan.

The show started in 1954 and moved to Burbank in 1972 with host Johnny Carson.

But there is no deal with NBC or the "Tonight" show, and the official wouldn't say if the state is trying to attract the show. The person wasn't authorized to comment on any potential deals and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

A bill in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's pending budget would need legislative approval.

Top Ten Signs Your Relationship Is Healthy | Chateau Heartiste

1. You admire and flirt with other women, but don?t plot to bed them.

If you as a healthy man aren?t admiring attractive women other than your girlfriend, you are depressed and your relationship will suffer. If you are actively figuring out ways to cheat, your monogamous relationship is unsatisfying.

2. She has photos of you and her together in her work cubicle.

It?s so natural for a woman to advertise her relationship status with a committed boyfriend that a conspicuous lack of photos of her boyfriend is strong circumstantial evidence she wishes to hide him from public knowledge and signal to other men that she is available for sexcapades. A man who doesn?t display relationship photos doesn?t necessarily signal dissatisfaction with his girlfriend, because men on average feel less compulsion than do women to engage in such ritual displays.

3. When you go away on a trip by yourself, she worries about your faithfulness.

If instead of her worrying about you, you worry about what she?ll do with her brief spell of freedom, your relationship is unhealthy.

4. The sex is rarely planned.

If you ever catch yourself or your girlfriend saying, ?Let?s make tonight a special night?, you have been served notice that your relationship is heading for sickly grounds.

5. She still cares if you remember birthdays and anniversaries.

Aloofness is sexy on a man. Aloofness is the kiss of relationship death on a woman. A woman who has stopped caring for signs of emotional commitment is a woman mentally checked out and fantasizing about a new relationship.

6. Blowjobs are frequently a prelude to coitus.

You can directly track relationship health by the decline in frequency of blowjobs. Each unit decrease in peak monthly blowjob allotment corresponds to a one month decrease in relationship length (unless obviated by threat of divorce theft).

7. You haven?t spent inordinate time waxing nostalgic about shared memories.

Healthy relationships are like a locomotive: powerful, unstoppable, graceful in their precise engineering, motoring to lands unknown. Nostalgia for past romantic achievements is a tacit admission of present romantic stagnation. Save the nostalgia for old age when there?s no threat of upgrade to a more exciting partner.

8. She?s lost her enthusiasm for girls? nights out.

A woman deeply in love feels less urge to hang out with her single girl friends. She now finds them dispiriting and a bit pathetic. In contrast, a woman dissatisfied with her relationship can?t wait to join the yentas for mimosas. Men, too, enjoy time with their buddies, but use it more as a pressure valve to blow off steam that accumulates in the natural course of monogamous obligation.

9. She?s stopped kissing her cat on the mouth (and other similar pet-loving gestures taken to the clownish extreme) and now treats her pets as they really are ? animals, not furry humans.

You might think this is a frivolous signal of relationship health, but intemperate female anthropomorphic intimacy is pregnant with suppressed emotional turmoil.

10. She wants your unsheathed penis inside her.

A woman who prefers you raw dog is a woman who is unafraid to take risks with you. She trusts you, loves you, and wants you to receive as much as, or even more pleasure than, she receives.

***

Generally speaking, once a woman is in a relationship she will grant you a margin of beta male error, which means you can be more beta with a girlfriend or wife than you can be with a girl you have just started dating. The width of this margin of beta male error varies commensurate to the intensity of preexisting love she feels for you, and any cultural and genetic factors related to her local surrounding sexual marketplace and her ethnic or racial background, (e.g.: women from more chaotic non-Western countries better appreciate the stability and security that doting beta males offer).

But this is a warning, not an excuse for men in relationships to rest on their beta laurels, for all women, even the loving Slavs, have their breaking points for male weakness and clinginess, beyond which their tolerance drops precipitously. If you sincerely love your girlfriend or wife and you find your relationship beginning to sour, the answer is not, typically, more beta male reassurance game, but more exciting sexy alpha game. The broad contours of women?s desire are universal, even if the details on close examination differ; nearly every woman in the world (except weird biological experiments gone horribly wrong) is a sexually and romantically dichotomous creature, drawn both to the strong, supportive provider and the dominant, aloof challenge.

Your mission in life as a man seeking to maximize his happiness is to appeal to these dueling instincts in women, embrace the entanglement for all its life-affirming exhilaration, and relish the blessings of womanly love. The rest is commentary.
