Our Family Holiday: Like Home, But More So ? Welcome to the New ...

We have just had our first family holiday in five years. Nothing grand. A week in Scotland, fighting off midges and dodging the showers. We are lucky. Many people, in Britain and beyond, will be responding to austere times by staying at home this summer.

The ?staycation? ? taking a vacation from work without leaving home ? can be a tempting holiday option when you have small children. The thought of negotiating an airport departures hall with a two, four, six, eight, nine and 13-year-old in tow, is to awful to contemplate.

So we chose somewhere we could drive to. Even then, loading up the VW Transporter for a few days north of the border, represented quite an effort. We have what American generals during the Gulf War used to call a ?long logistics train?.

It was a 10-hour-long journey to our destination in Argyllshire. My husband had vetoed the purchase of portable DVD-players. ?Children are so over-stimulated,? he pronounced, ?sometimes it?s good for them to get a little bit bored?. I was tempted to ask whether he was sticking with that philosophy when the children began what sounded like a mini-riot as we crossed into Cumbria on the M6.

But we made it in one piece, with no travel sickness. There was even a game of I-Spy as we drove beside Loch Lomond. Proof, perhaps, that mild adversity (well, boredom) can be the mother of invention.

Our home for the week was part of a house where an old work colleague, his wife and daughters, now live. A decade ago he quit his stressful London media job for a quieter life in his native Scotland, swapping a relatively modest home in the south-east of England for a rambling farm not far from Iona, where Saint Columba took early Christianity to the Picts.

Not everyone likes to holiday in what is, ostensibly, the home of another person. But we loved the chance to be somewhere different, using it as a base to explore some beautiful countryside and rocky beaches.

And, most of all, it was a bonding experience. Children do not always get our fullest attention as we wrestle with the laundry or spend our days shuttling one of them to and fro;? a friend?s birthday party here and an after-school club there. But this week it was simply us and them, without the distractions provided by friends, neighbours, playdates, parental commutes or domestic tasks.

Perhaps, most of all it was a bonding experience for our children. For them, there was no getting away from one another. You cannot run-off to sulk in your bedroom when you are on a forced march through the heather. As my husband put it: ?This is like home, just more so.?

Big week - Adoption.com Forums

We have a big week ahead of us! Curly and her mom have their "goodbye" visit with the therapist on Wednesday. It isn't really goodbye since we are planning on a very open adoption but they are using this visit for mom to tell Curly, in her own words, her reasons for her decisions and to give her some more of her background story. They plan on using our life book and mom's photo albums to help her tell the story as the therapist's supervisor writes down what mom says. She is then going to print it out to go in Curly's life book. Any specific questions you feel should be put out there for Curly to "ask" mom? We are supposed to write some down on pieces of paper and Curly is going to color them and give them to mom during the session.

Then Friday is our mediation with dad. We have our fingers and toes crossed that he shows up. If he surrenders we are looking at a September/ October adoption date. If he doesn't we are looking at a November/December proof hearing to terminate his rights and then 3-4 months for the judges decision and THEN adoption somewhere in 2013. Dad hasn't seen Curly since January when he had his bonding eval that went horrible for him. Before that he hadn't seen her in 3-4 months and before that he was in prison for an extended period with no contact. He was free to come to visits whenever he wanted, he just never did. Please let him care enough to show up, sign the papers and for once do the right thing for Curly!!

Mass. dad shoots his 2 kids, 1 fatally

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) ? A man who had recently separated from his wife shot his two children, killing his 7-year-old daughter, before committing suicide, prosecutors said.

A family member called police Saturday night after finding the bodies of 41-year-old Daryl Benway and his daughter, Abigail, in the master bedroom of their two-story Oxford home, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said.

Benway's 9-year-old son, Owen, was found shot in the head in the kitchen and was taken to UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center in serious condition. Owen has been in pediatric intensive care, a spokesman for Early said Sunday. He said he had no additional information about Owen Benway's condition, and a hospital spokeswoman would not comment.

Benway's wife, Kelleen, returned home after the shootings, unaware of what had happened, and found a swarm of police cruisers and television crews, Early said. She was taken to the children's hospital, where authorities told her the fates of her children and husband.

Neighbors told the Telegram & Gazette that Daryl Benway's brother Shawn lived on the first floor of the home with his wife and mother. Shawn Benway called 911 to report the shootings, Early said.

Early said he couldn't speculate on a motive. He said the Benways separated weeks ago but were still married.

No restraining orders had been filed against Daryl Benway, and he had no criminal record, the DA said. He had a gun license that expired in 1999, Early said.

On Daryl Benway's Facebook page, his profile picture posted in December showed him with his family in front of a Christmas tree. He described the woman next to him as "my Beautiful wife Kelleen." Owen stood in front of him in a white dress shirt and red plaid tie, while brown-haired Abigail wore a black and white dress with a black hair bow.

Daryl Benway listed his place of employment as TJX Cos., which operates discount retailers TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, as well as Ross Stores Inc.

Nigeria edge Tunisia in Olympic basketball opener

Alade Aminu scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Ike Diogu added 13 points and 10 rebounds as Nigeria just beat Tunisia 60-56 in the opening game of the Olympic men's basketball tournament.

Al-Farouq Aminu, who played for the NBA New Orleans Hornets last season, added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Nigerians, who have not lost to reigning African champion Tunisia in international competition since 1987.

The two African sides in the London line-up were both making their Olympic debuts in the Group A round-robin contest. The top four teams in each of two groups advance to the medal playoffs.

Nigeria were the last team to qualify for the Olympics, having beaten the Dominican Republic in the qualifying tournament decider to advance after upsetting Greece earlier in that event.

Only three Nigerian players were born in the African nation. The others, including former NBA San Antonio Spur Diogu, were born in the United States but are of Nigerian heritage.

Tunisian captain Amine Rzig scored 18 points in a losing cause.

The Nigerians seized their largest lead at 29-10 on the way to a 31-15 half-time advantage before Tunisia rallied, scoring 25 points in the fourth quarter and pulling within 56-54 in the final seconds on a Mourad El Mabrouk three-pointer.

Nigeria sank three free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

It is perfectly normal to be depressed if you don?t achieve your goals in a very healthy weight loss program, nonetheless it should only be non permanent.

If you don?t have confidence within your ability to lose weight, it might be because you haven?t well prepared yourself properly to do it. Most confident people get that way by working at something until they are successful at it. They don?t start out successful; they make it and most frequently that is by way of faltering first.

Your attitude should be that experienceing this weight you want is a LIFETIME accomplishment, not a quick fix. Gov't: Great Recession bit less weak than thought

(AP) ? Here's a small consolation: The Great Recession wasn't quite as horrendous as previously thought.

But it was still pretty horrendous: Updated government estimates from January 2009 through December 2011 show that the downturn remains by far the worst recession since the Great Depression.

And growth since the recession officially ended in June 2009 has been slightly less than previous estimates. That's a reminder of how weak the recovery has been.

The revisions were released Friday by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis with its report on April-June growth. Each year in July, the bureau revises the previous three years of data on the nation's gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the economy.

The changes show the economy shrank 4.7 percent from the start of the recession in December 2007 until it ended three years ago. That's 0.4 percentage point less than the previous estimate of 5.1 percent.

The main reason for the revision: State and local governments spent more in 2009 than initially thought.

Still, only two previous recessions suffered contractions greater than 3 percent. One was in 1957, the other in 1973.

Since the Great Recession ended, growth has been modest at best. From July 2009 through the end of 2011, the economy grew a total of 5.8 percent. That's down from an earlier measure of 6.2 percent.

The economy grew at an average annual rate of 0.3 percent from 2008 through 2011, the government said. That's down from an earlier measure of 0.4 percent.

Some quarters were revised significantly. The government says the economy grew at an annual rate of 4.1 percent in last year's fourth quarter, up from a previous estimate of only 3 percent. That was because companies added more to their stockpiles, and governments spent more.

And the first and second quarters of 2010 were revised down sharply, from nearly 4 percent each to 2.3 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively. That reflected much less investment in business equipment and software.

The revisions are based on more complete data from a range of sources, including annual Census surveys of retailers and manufacturers and IRS tax records. The IRS data is made available only after a two-year lag. The Census data are also delayed.

Here are the changes the Commerce Department made to the past 12 quarters:

Why Go to the Dentist | HTML5 Web Videos

I think going to the local dentist is a privilege. I live in an area where the local dentist is not just one dentistry. There are several and many dentist offices around. I have plenty of dentistry office to choose from to book an appointment for oral/dental care services. Not only are there several general dentist health care offices, but there are a lot of specialized dentist health care offices.
?
I?ve enjoyed a life of good dental health care due to past dentistry habits of regular dental health care visits, routine and effective dental health care habits, and great dental health genes. Even in my fantastic dental health, I have needed the dental services of a specialized dentist twice?once for an oral surgeon dentist to repair some of my dental tissues with minor oral surgery services, and the second for oral surgery services to remove my wisdom teeth just for dental preventative care precautions. Both of the dental services I received from a specialized dentist where services I was able to choose after some oral health care counsel from my general dentist office. The general dentist informed by of the reasons why the dental procedures would be a good idea, for preventative dental care measures only to remove the possibility of dental health care problems popping up in the future. If I could prevent these dental problems through less expensive dentist services and very minor oral services now then in the future I wouldn?t have to worry about having to choose major oral surgery or oral health care services from not being able to choose in the past, to do some simple dental procedures.
?
Dentist health care services are so important to the health of a city and area. It?s not everywhere that you can choose your dentistry from a selection of dentist?s offices. It may be that in an area there is only one local dentist and one local oral surgeon services. It may be that in an area the local dentist cannot perform specialized dental services such as dental implants and the dental patients would have to choose to travel some distance for their most local dentist specialist.
?
In any case, it is very important to the health of an area to have a dentist and to have those oral health care services. Oral health is linked to good over-all health. So, even if your local dentist is not so conveniently located in your area, it is important to book an appointment twice a year or at least once a year to have some routine dental health care. The great thing about going to a routine dental appointment is that the dentist actually does something for the money you?re paying, not just dental tests like a routine well-visit with the doctor. You?re actually paying the dentist and dentistry team to clean your teeth and provide the best oral health care services that you cannot do for yourself. Even with the correct tools you can?t be a dentist for yourself because you just can?t see and reach those hard to clean oral spots that the dentist can get to so easily!

In any case, it is very important to the health of an area to have a dentist and to have those oral health care services. Oral health is linked to good over-all?. Learn more at Best Ithaca Dentist and Dentist in Ithaca

This Week In Retro Gaming News ? July 26 2012 ? OGR

Yo retro gamers! Bringing you the briefs on what went down in the retro gaming world this past week!

###

Box art.

For anniversaries this week, we have Mario Paint (SNES) turning 20 years old. I still think it?s weird that we never saw an updated version on the Wii, since it would?ve been sweet with motion control.

###

Gameplay screenshot.

On the ?new retro games? front, we have a team working on a 16-bit-style game called Volgarr The Viking, set as an ode to old-school Sega Genesis platforming hack-?n'-slash games, meant to be challenging, rewarding, and just plain fun. They are using Kickstarter to fund it, and looks like it will be a triumphant success story.

###

Patrick Scott Patterson

Speaking of Kickstarter, gaming advocate Patrick Scott Patterson is seeking a relatively modest amount of funds so that he can simply purchase new video equipment to provide even better content for gamers everywhere. His social media efforts have only been growing, and both modern gamers and retro gamers alike probably have a lot to look forward to in terms of his exclusive content.

###

1morecastle-manifesto-post

Newcomer retro gaming site 1 More Castle is launching new video content, with new contributors signing up recently that have agreed to provide high-quality retro gaming series. The Retro Critic was already doing a weekly text review, but his look at Batman on Game Boy launches his video series as well, along with newcomer Retrocity whose initial video covers Sega Mega Drive mascots. The two series will join the already-established Retro Lookback.

###

And last, but probably not least, Review A Bad Game Day (which @AusRetroGamer has dubbed ?Abomination Day?) is coming up soon, on August 8th! Want to participate? All you have to do is post a review of a video game that you think is bad, on August 8. That?s it! The Heavy Metal Gamer even made an ominous trailer to watch.

###

And that?s the news for this week! Have a hot lead or a new tip you want to give me so I can provide coverage? Email me: eric[at]1morecastle.com. See ya next week!

Middle-class tax cut extension passes Senate: Policy or politics?

Senate Democrats squeak through an extension of middle-class tax cuts. Republicans deride it as damaging to the economy. And a January train wreck for spending cuts and tax increases looms even closer. ??

By David Grant,?Staff Writer / July 25, 2012

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., center, talks about the yearlong tax cut extension bill Democrats passed by a near party-line 51-48 vote, at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, July 25, 2012.

Senate Democrats squeezed through an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for households making up to $250,000 Wednesday, pushing a measure that has little chance of Congressional passage but instead highlights both the persistent gridlock and the quest for political points ahead of November?s election.

The 51-48 vote was so tight that Vice President Joe Biden was called to preside over the debate, sitting in the speaker?s chair in case he was needed to serve as a tiebreaker.?

Two retiring senators, Sen. Jim Webb (D) of Virginia and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I) of Connecticut, who caucuses with Democrats, voted with a united Republican front against the bill. ?But a slew of Democrats in tough reelection contests including Sen. Jon Tester of Montana to Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri held the line by voting in favor.

Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R) of Kentucky allowed the vote to proceed with only a simple majority in order to put Democrats on the record as supporting or promoting a proposition that Republicans deride as a massive tax increase on small businesses.

Diet And Nutrition Blog: My Nutritional Advice From a Personal Trainer

What's the point of doing extensive exercises and workouts when you don't get and maintain a proper diet and nutrition? Your Personal Trainer will not only guide you through the workouts, but also help control of your appetite, diet and nutrition plans. Since your goal is to build your body in such a way that you'll look and feel good and healthy, it is therefore important that you watch what you eat because some of it could just make the program and your efforts useless.

It's always easier for most of us to gain weight rather than to lose it. With our busy daily lives, we always find ourselves stressed upon arriving at home coming from the day's work, leaving no time for exercise routines. Added to that is the potential emotional eating that stress could bring you, which will only add to the unhealthy and unwise eating habits you could start to develop. Summing them all up, the results are saturated fats and obesity, which is very harmful and unattractive.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than the cure. Your Personal Trainer can guide you to avoid these harmful effects and instead give you nutritional facts and tips that you can apply.

Some of them could be the following:

1. Fruits and healthy juices are best snacks you can run into during periods of stress and potential emotional eating.
2. Say goodbye to cola and say hello to flavored water.
3. Even 1% saturated fat content matters, go for foods without any saturated fat content.
4. Sugar is related to calories. The sweeter it gets, the higher the possibility you'll get fat.

There are still many more which are up in your trainer's sleeve. Better avail his service now so that your personal trainer can show and teach them all to you without hesitation. After all, our goal here is help each other maintain fitness and nutrition in their lives. Effective personal trainer's advice can help people get into the best shape of their lives.

What your personal trainer will tell you about food and my favorite tips
A lot of people think that if they minimize eating, they'd probably do well with their dieting. However, it is also important to remember that food is necessary. You just have to know which ones are good for your diet and which ones are not. My life as a personal trainer recommends the following on food.

Pack your meals with protein and not fats.
Especially when you are aiming to build muscles, your meals must be high in protein and must be present in 5-6 meals per day unlike the usual 3 meals you have.

Avoid soda.
Aside from causing you kidney diseases, diabetes and other ailments, sodas can make you pack on pounds a lot faster than any other drinks because of their high sugar content. Be safe and healthy. Drink water.

Ban yogurts if you are trying to lose weight.
Many of us think that yogurts are healthy. Well, they are but not for those who want to shed extra pounds off their bodies for the simple reason that they are packed with sugar.

Pasta and bread can make you hungrier.
This is a contradiction to what we have always believed that pasta and bread can be very filling. The fact is that they can cause more hunger because of a lowered blood sugar.

Red wine and beer can make you hungrier.
You might as well skip them when you are trying to lose weight. Why? Notice how you feel hungry after drinking these beverages? This means that you'll crave for more food.

Make grapes your substitute for chips as snacks.
To stop yourself from consuming those unhealthy snacks, (e.g. chips and sodas) you can try grapes. They have natural sugar sans fats.

Egg can keep you fuller longer.
It has a high protein content which can prevent blood sugar spikes that result to food cravings.

Dieting for weight loss doesn't necessarily mean that you give up food. It simply requires the right food and discipline to get the perfect shape you want.

Dearest Pasta Alfredo... it's been way too long! - StyleNectar

?

In case it wasn't obvious, I am overwhelmed with enthusiasm about the Raw Vegan adventure I embarked upon 3 1/2 weeks ago. ?I do not exagerate when I say it's as if I started some amazing miracle meds ... I suddenly have tons more energy, my moods are even keel and happy (er, I'm actually ecstatic most of the time) any cravings I once had for unhealthy foods have dissapeared (and been replaced for cravings for my new Raw Vegan fare) and last but not least this food is outrageously delicious! I have so many awesome recipes I want to share, I'm busting at the seams... not to mention I can't wait to introduce my dehydrator, sprouting trays and other new friends. Good times.

Alas, today is about a simple, delicious dish I haven't had since my good old days as a hostess at Amici's Italian Restaurant, Pasta Alfredo. ?I remember the first day I watched Eric (the chef & owner) prepare pasta alfredo; a stick of butter, a cup of cream, some salt & pepper and not much else all tossed together with fettucine and poured into a single serving pasta bowl. ?Yikes! ?I'd had no idea 'til then what exactly it took to create one of my favorite items on the menu and ever since it's been one of those dishes I never eat...

Until now!

Penn State, And How Nonprofit Boards Will Shape ... - Fast Company

This article is written by a member of our expert contributor community.

To begin with, many of you did plenty. If you?re reading this post, then it?s likely that you?re active in social media. Public attention to recent nonprofit board scandals, as well as robust participation via Twitter, Facebook, and other social media has been influential in the cases of Penn State, University of Virginia, and the Komen Foundation. There were financial and reputational consequences for organizations led by people who made bad decisions.

Beyond these three cases, you are having an exponential impact because two messages are loud and clear: 1) Boards of nonprofit organizations can no longer be secretive about the ways in which they are handling their responsibilities; there will be transparency, and 2) Boards are being held responsible to act with integrity, for the purpose of the mission, in the best interests of the people whom they serve; boards will be held accountable.

For many of us who have served on and worked with boards for over two decades, we eagerly welcome these newly heightened levels of transparency and accountability. For too long, ?old school? funders and board members have shuttered themselves behind closed doors and been complacent about board apathy and dysfunctional practices.

Here?s what you?ve done to alert nonprofit boards that it?s no longer business as usual:

  1. Raised public awareness that the boards of directors of nonprofits--global, national, and regional organizations, including universities and healthcare institutions--have the authority, power, and responsibility to ensure the integrity of the organization in achieving its mission.
  2. Held organizations accountable by asking tough questions, and expressing your dissatisfaction upon learning that board members have neglected their duties, even potentially sitting idly by while children were being abused.
  3. Shifted your financial contributions from one organization to another when you disagreed with a shift in board policies, or even the reckless way in which the board might have made key decisions.

Here?s why it matters that you?ve engaged in this public discussion about boards:

  1. Boards are on notice that if they neglect their duties in putting the mission and integrity of the organization above all, they are likely to be exposed. As a result, boards will no longer be able to stifle dissent and discussion; board members will be more emboldened to ask the questions that need to be asked; and boards will be more conscientious, deliberate, and thoughtful about fulfilling their responsibilities.
  2. More funders and donors will ask questions about how the boards function at their grantee organizations.
  3. Board members, funders, donors, and board consultants will improve boards by focusing on: board composition, leadership, governance practices, structure, process, and most importantly, ethics and fiduciary responsibilities.

Here?s what you can do to further advance the momentum for better boards:

  1. Continue to be attentive to what happens in nonprofit board rooms in the news, among the organizations that your company funds, and where you make contributions.
  2. Continue to engage in the discussions via social media.
  3. Consider joining a nonprofit board yourself. It?s likely that you have professional skills and expertise, as well as perspectives from your personal experience that will be valuable in helping to advance a nonprofit in achieving its mission. Here are factors to consider in terms of your being ready to join a board, choose a board, find a board that fits, and benefit from the experience.

NGOs and nonprofits address issues of poverty, education, renewable natural resources, healthcare, housing, social justice, human rights, jobs, economic development, and arts and culture, among other things. Boards have the ultimate authority to ensure that these organizations use their resources as intended by donors, governments, and other funders to achieve their missions for a better world.

With your attention to governance and nonprofits, you are helping to ensure that boards fulfill their responsibilities in helping to build a better world.

Adult stem cells from liposuction used to create blood vessels in the lab

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Adult stem cells extracted during liposuction can be used to grow healthy new small-diameter blood vessels for use in heart bypass surgery and other procedures, according to new research presented at the American Heart Association's Basic Cardiovascular Sciences 2012 Scientific Sessions.

Millions of cardiovascular disease patients are in need of small-diameter vessel grafts for procedures requiring blood to be routed around blocked arteries.

These liposuction-derived vessels, grown in a lab, could help solve major problems associated with grafting blood vessels from elsewhere in the body or from using artificial blood vessels that are not living tissue, said Matthias Nollert, Ph.D., the lead author of the study and associate professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering, in Norman, Okla.

"Current small-diameter vessel grafts carry an inherent risk of clotting, being rejected or otherwise failing to function normally," Nollert said. "Our engineered blood vessels have good mechanical properties and we believe they will contract normally when exposed to hormones. They also appear to prevent the accumulation of blood platelets -- a component in blood that causes arteries to narrow."

In this study, adult stem cells derived from fat are turned into smooth muscle cells in the laboratory, and then "seeded" onto a very thin collagen membrane. As the stem cells multiplied, the researchers rolled them into tubes matching the diameter of small blood vessels. In three to four weeks, they grew into usable blood vessels.

Creating blood vessels with this technique has the potential for "off-the-shelf" replacement vessels that can be used in graft procedures, Nollert said.

The researchers hope to have a working prototype to test in animals within six months.

How Can 5 HTP Side Effects Transform Your Life Learn How To ...

Is it truly possible to make it through an extramarital affair? When your partner has been unfaithful, you might think that it will be very unlikely to forgive. You will be able to move on with your lives as soon as you learn how to forgive. When unfaithfulness takes place, the anguish it brings can be too much to handle. But the majority of marriage counselors consent that extramarital affairs can at times make the spousal relationship actually much stronger. But never make the error of having an affair with the belief of making your marriage healthier.

In this document, we shall talk about how to survive an affair. Yes, the bond can become stronger if it survives the extramarital relationship but that?s an incredibly big if. Extramarital relationships tend to be very damaging to what an otherwise might be a joyful spousal relationship. Trust may be rebuilt but it'll take a good deal of time - several years in many cases. Infidelity truly isn?t even at the top of the list of causes of divorce.

A lot of individuals are confused about why extramarital relationships happen. The truth is this is not often about sex. Extramarital affairs occur when the married couples have ceased communicating meaningfully with one another. Existence can be quite a lonely journey and your spouse must be your life companion. When meaningful interaction is absent, companionship significantly suffers. You have to accept and also love one another. An affair could soon follow once love and acceptance disappears.

In some cases, an extramarital relationship can be a cry for help. Being appreciated is a natural human want. If the couple loves a lot of private time together, it?s highly probable that they'll stay with each other. Intimate time with each other is very important but it must be coupled with understanding as well as acceptance. A relationship solely based on sex won't be strong enough to make it through troubles that are sure to come.

Deciding to save the marriage is vital and is the necessary first step. Additionally, both you and your husband or wife need to be in agreement that restoring the marriage is very important to you. Saving a marital relationship cannot be done by just one person. They say that it takes 2 to tango. There is an underlying problem or issues that must be fixed when extramarital relationships come about. Both partners must be willing to figure out how to solve these fundamental problems.

You cannot expect the journey of fixing your marriage to be easy. Other people who were victims of unfaithfulness survived. If others did it, it is possible to surely do it too. Family members and close friends might help. But in some cases, only a marriage psychologist would be able to provide the help you require. A good time to face your erring husband or wife is when the emotions have subsided. After you?ve just found out the affair, refrain from speaking with your unfaithful wife or husband. Give yourself some time to get back your composure.

Reconciliation is quite often hampered by emotions. You might be thinking that it's not fair that you need to suffer from the mistake of your wife or husband and you are right. However, if you truly would like your spousal relationship to work, you'll have to make some sacrifices.

Mariah Carey joins 'American Idol' as new judge

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Mariah Carey will join "American Idol" as a judge next season, Fox announced Monday, bringing her star power to the show that remains a ratings leader but has seen its viewership and pop culture status diminish.

"I am so excited to be joining 'Idol,'" said Carey, addressing the Television Critics Association via Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly's cellphone, which he put on speakerphone for the hotel ballroom meeting.

She couldn't be on hand with the group because "this kind of all just happened really quickly," Carey said in her brief remarks. "I can't wait to get started in the fall ... and I will see you in January."

The show, which saw judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez exit at the end of last season, will be back on the air for season 12 in January.

Reilly called Carey "the biggest recording artist that any of these (talent) shows has ever had," adding that she was the "artist that many of these contestants have tried to emulate, have tried some of the songs, have tried to hit the notes."

Playing the drama up, Reilly placed a call to Carey and put her on speaker.

"Hi, Mariah. How are you? It's Kevin," he said. "We do have a deal, don't we? Yes!"

Reilly said he was "thrilled" to confirm reports that Carey was being courted by Fox and said the deal was freshly signed within the last few hours. The Grammy-winning pop star is receiving just shy of $18 million a year for a one-year contract with a renewal option, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person, lacking authority to discuss the matter publicly, spoke on condition of anonymity.

The exit of Tyler and Lopez left original judge Randy Jackson and started a guessing game about potential replacements, with Carey at the top of the list.

As one of music's best-selling singers, she could provide the clout "American Idol" needs to compete in an increasingly crowded talent show field. Besides Fox sibling "The X Factor," which recently added Britney Spears and Demi Lovato as judges, there's NBC's "The Voice," which boasts Christina Aguilera among its big names.

"Not being the only game in town now, we need to keep things fresh," Reilly said. The search is on for a third judge, and he promised another impressive pick. It could a star or someone like music executive and "Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine, who wasn't a household name when he joined, Reilly said. But, he added, after 12 seasons "we need to have something to talk about."

"We have the biggest names in the business, like Mariah Carey, interested in doing this ... so for the next couple of weeks it will be a matter of picking the right one, with the right chemistry, making the deal, and finalizing this," he said.

Jackson's value to the show was enhanced by Carey's signing, although Fox has yet to say whether he'll judge next season. Ryan Seacrest will be back as host.

"I can't confirm and don't want to talk about anyone" else on the show, Reilly said. But he added that Jackson "has been working with Mariah and is in fact her co-manager, and Randy was very instrumental in doing this deal."

Simon Cowell, the former "American Idol" judge who adapted his U.K. hit "X Factor" for Fox, was asked about Carey's new gig at a critics' session later Monday.

"I'm happy for her, actually. I like Mariah. I think she's going to find it difficult to say no. You've got to say no to people and she's sweet," he said, then quickly backtracked, adding, "No, I think she'll be great."

Cowell had reason to be diplomatic: Carey's husband, Nick Cannon, is host of Cowell's "America's Got Talent" on NBC.

"American Idol" ended the 2011-12 season as the leading entertainment show and No. 2 overall, just behind NBC's top-rated "Sunday Night Football."

But the show aired its least-watched finale ever this season and the advertiser-favored young adult audience has been steadily shrinking. The show's cachet hasn't been helped by a run of champions who have failed to achieve the career sizzle of past competitors Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson.

Earlier Monday, veteran "Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said there's a slender possibility that Lopez might return. His reasoning: Since she told Seacrest she was 99 percent sure she was leaving, that means there's a 1 percent chance she won't, Lythgoe said.

He said he hoped that was the case, although Lythgoe also told the critics' annual summer meeting that he thought the show should be freshened each season with new judges.

But Lopez's representative confirmed again Monday that she's leaving "American Idol." She originally made the announcement July 13, a day after Tyler said he was leaving.

Reilly also disputed Lythgoe's comment, saying, "it's 100 percent that Jennifer won't be back to the show."

"We came to a mutual decision with Jennifer and Steven," he said, calling it a "great experience with both of them. Creatively, we were all happy."

But it was decided "it was the time for a change," Reilly said.

Lythgoe said his own contract is under negotiation, declining to comment further. Reilly later called Lythgoe "the best producer in the business."

Apple: Mountain Lion OS X upgrade arrives Wednesday

10 hrs.

During their third quarter earnings call, Apple reported solid sales of iPhones and iPads, and announced it would release OS X 10.8 (also?known as Mountain Lion) on?Wednesday. The update brings Facebook integration and several iOS features to the Mac, and will cost $19.99.

The release date was previously only known to be sometime in July. iOS is still coming out "this Fall," according to CEO Tim Cook, who also said they have some new products "in the pipeline."

Mountain Lion includes iMessage and a Notification Center, two popular?iOS features, and a new ubiquitous share button is coming to many applications. New dictation and iCloud features have been added, along with?a mode called PowerNap, which allows newer Macs to receive updates and messages while asleep.

The company sold 26 million iPhones and 17 million iPads this quarter, up significantly from the same time from last year. Some analysts were concerned that the upcoming iPhone 5 would dampen demand for the current model, and others suggested that the most recent revision of the iPad was underwhelming and would not see a major increase in sales. Although they did sell more than the same period last year, the numbers were still below analysts' expectations.

Eligible Macs (2GB of RAM, 8GB of hard drive space, and OS X 10.6.8 or newer) will be able to download the update from the Mac App Store tomorrow. As with the Lion release, there won't be a DVD version of the OS?for sale.?

Travel Without A Hitch By Using These Tips | articlereference.net

Using a canoe can be a great means of travel for those who want to see waterways and national park areas. Apart from being quiet so it won?t disturb any animals or people around the paddling required to power the canoe is a good way to get exercise. Canoes make one feel more in touch with their surroundings.

When traveling, it?s not always necessary to stay together. Let Mom take the kids one day while Dad enjoys a round of golf. The next day Mom should relax in the spa while Dad and the kids enjoy some pool time. Splitting up allows each parent to enjoy a much needed break during travel time.

To get the best deal on popular local attractions, always ask your hotel first if they offer discounted tickets. In major tourist destinations like New York City, it is common for hotel chains to offer discounted rates to their guests. The same is true of family destinations like Florida where many hotels pump up their occupancy rates with reduced amusement park admissions.

If you are going on a long plane ride and the person in the seat next to you has a lot to say, and you really don?t want to hear it, just pretend to nod off. When they see that you are sleeping, I would hope that they would get the idea and be quiet.

When traveling by plane make sure you take every precaution you can to ensure smooth travels. You first want to make sure your luggage does not exceed the maximum weight requirements by the airlines. You also want to label all of your luggage so that there is no confusion with other passengers who have similar luggage to yours.

For the inside scoop, join a travel forum months before you decide on a destination or lodging. People who enjoy traveling and discussing their experiences are an excellent source of information and most remain completely objective when making recommendations and offering detailed reviews and information.

Check the State Department?s travel alerts when you are planning a foreign trip. They provide up to date information related to your destination so you will know in advance if there is a medical or political emergency in the region. Make sure you have all the shots recommended by the department to avoid lengthy and possibly life threatening illnesses.

So remember, avoiding rushing is the key to successful business travel. By planning your travel well ahead of your meetings and obligations, you will be able to save some money, relax and have a good time. See if you can take a day off before and after the trip to avoid feeling pressured and rushed. In this way, you will have a productive and enjoyable business trip.

As election approaches, candidates beef up their spending

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Less than four months until the U.S. presidential election, Republican candidate Mitt Romney's campaign is beefing up on personnel and investing more cash internally as outside groups pour millions into television ads to help him counter Democratic President Barack Obama's messaging over the airwaves.

Obama's spending still dwarfs Romney's June outlays, with two-thirds of it going toward advertising, but federal disclosures filed on Friday show the Republican candidate investing more in his campaign's infrastructure, something Obama did months ago, as the race has been stuck in dead heat.

Obama's campaign doled out $58.1 million in June, nearly twice as much as he raised, Friday's filings showed. Facing no competition within his own party, Obama got an early start on ad buys, framing his Republican challenger negatively.

Romney's campaign spent $27.5 million in June, nearly double the $15.6 million it spent in May and $12.6 million spent in April, when Romney first emerged as the presumed Republican presidential nominee.

Romney spent less than half of his June haul on advertising, Reuters analysis of filings showed.

The internal spending uptick was expected as campaigning heats up in earnest, but it raises concerns of burning through cash on expenses that are not direct outreach to likely or potential voters, including ads.

Now, the scale appears to be leveling as Romney added 125 new paid staff members in June for a total of 272 and spent $491,088 more on their salaries for a total of $1.3 million. He also spent nearly $440,000 on office supplies, furniture, equipment and other infrastructure buildup and equipment and $9.6 million on various consulting services.

Obama's campaign added 76 new paid staffers in June for a total of 779, paying them $2.8 million.

LAW'S LIMITATIONS

One hurdle for Romney is a provision of the U.S. campaign law that prohibits some funds to be spent until he is officially nominated at the Republican convention in late August.

Campaigns are allowed to accept up to $5,000 from a donor, but only half of that can be spent before the convention.

Romney's campaign has reported having about $850,000 walled off to be available only for use after the convention. He also has a joint fund with the Republican National Committee that presumably has millions set off for the general election but filings so far have not clarified how much exactly.

His campaign has repeatedly argued that the rule has put Romney at a disadvantage because Obama ran for re-election unopposed and he fought a bitter fight against rival Republicans. Obama, who had no Democratic opponents, has $7.8 million set aside for the general election.

"We ... spent most of our primary dollars on the primary," Romney told the Toledo Blade newspaper in an interview this week. "There are just many places we can't afford to be running ads. So we are massively outspent by a President that had no primary. And we are able to both shift into general election funds after our conventions, and we will be able to be more competitive, and you'll to see more of us as that occurs."

In June, Romney's campaign received $24 million in donations and had $22.5 million in cash on hand, while Obama's campaign received $28.1 million and had $97.5 million left in the bank.

'SUPER PAC' HELP

Obama's TV advertising spending has been effectively balanced out by Republican Super Pals, predominantly American Crossroads and the pro-Romney Restore Our Future.

Obama and Priorities USA Action, the outside "super" political action committee helping the president, have spent the past several weeks pummeling Romney's past as a private equity executive and painting him as an out-of-touch rich man.

Priorities earlier this week bought $4 million worth of advertising time in the battleground states of Colorado, Nevada and Florida, targeting Hispanic voters with a Spanish-language ad.

Restore Our Future spent $7.2 million on ads that will run in 11 states from the end of July through August 9, while American Crossroads is spending $9.3 million on ads in nine states, defending Romney from the Democrats' attacks on his business record.

The Obama campaign earlier this week started airing a new ad raising questions about why Romney, a millionaire, will not release more of his tax returns.

Republicans for months have been pointing to Obama's rate of spending - for two months in a row now he's spent more than he has raised - calling it unsustainable.

"I trust the Obama campaign, who ran a pretty good campaign four years ago, that they can do it this time around," said Barry Goodman, a Michigan fundraiser who together with his business partner has "bundled" more than $500,000 for the president's re-election campaign.

"They must feel comfortable that they can raise more."

In 2008, Obama set a fundraising record of $750 million hauled in, but this year his campaign has been sounding alarms that thanks to deep-pocketed Republican outside spending groups, Obama could be the first ever incumbent to be outspent.
