Northern Ireland police mount major security operation for key parade

BELFAST | Sat Sep 29, 2012 9:11pm BST

BELFAST (Reuters) - A major parade that Northern Irish politicians and security forces feared could spark fighting between Catholics and Protestant passed peacefully on Saturday after police mounted their biggest security operation in 20 years.

Some 30,000 Protestants marked the centenary of one of the most historic events in a province scarred by decades of sectarian violence, the signing of a pact by half a million of their ancestors opposing the introduction of devolved government in Ireland.

Eight Protestant Unionist organisations, including members of the Orange Order, marched through Belfast to celebrate, twice passing a Catholic church where violence had recently flared up.

More than 1,000 members of the British security forces were among 3,600 people killed during 30 years of the "Troubles" in the province which has a minority Catholic population.

The violence between mainly Catholic nationalists and pro-British Protestants was largely ended by a 1998 peace deal, but sporadic violence has grown in recent years and a far smaller march earlier this month incited three nights of rioting.

Most parades across Northern Ireland pass peacefully each year but violence often breaks out when marchers cross or pass close to rival communities, particularly during the divisive summer marching season which is nearing its conclusion.

Hundreds of police officers were outside the Catholic church as 2,000 Protestants and bandsmen passed peacefully by as their march began and again when they walked by on their return leg without incident.

The Parades Commission, the body that decides whether or not marches can take place, ordered bands accompanying the loyalist marches to play only hymns as they walked by the church.

It also restricted to 150 the number of Catholic protestors, who waved black flags and held banners urging respect for their church.

Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) which now shares power in the local assembly with its former Unionist foes, said it was unhappy with the behaviour of a number of bands.

Marchers also gathered at Belfast's City Hall, where the Ulster Covenant was signed, and marched 10 kilometres (six miles) to Stormont, the home of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government where religious services, music and dancing were held.

(AP Photo/Tony Avelar, File)

(AP) ? K'naan kicked off a free concert in Central Park on Saturday evening that also included performances by Black Keys and John Legend to call attention to poverty worldwide.

Dubbed the Global Citizen Festival, the concert lineup featured Neil Young, Band of Horses and Foo Fighters as well. Video of the event was streamed worldwide as about 60,000 music fans poured into the park.

The concert included a surprise appearance from Legend, who played "Imagine" at a piano on the Great Lawn stage, a short walk from where the song's author, John Lennon, once lived.

The concert was scheduled around the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week and organizers used an innovative approach to ticket distribution so that many concert-goers were forced to learn about an array of global problems, such as polio, malaria, child mortality, and polluted drinking water, in order to get a ticket.

Anyone wanting free tickets had to register at globalcitizen.org, which then required users to watch videos or read information about poverty-related issues. Each time material was consumed, users could earn points toward a drawing for tickets. Points were also accumulated by sharing information via Twitter or Facebook.

"Our social media campaign has been off the charts," said Hugh Evans, CEO and co-founder of the Global Poverty Project. The approach demonstrates a new model for harnessing digital tools that may be repeated for other big events with political or social messages.

Organizers said more than 71,000 people had signed up online, resulting in more than 3.5 million page views. On average, they spent just over six minutes consuming content or sharing information. Nearly 200,000 pieces of information were shared on Facebook, and just a bit more than that on Twitter. About 170,000 people signed petitions via the site, and there were 98,000 videos viewed to completion.

Evans said the project achieved its goals, set out last year, of getting more than 100,000 people to take action related to extreme poverty while telling a new story about the challenges. To that end, the site conveys information in detailed, documentary-like accounts and uses an array of video, graphics and stories that are friendly for mobile and digital consumption.

Financially, he said, the project also achieved its yearlong goal ? working with an array of organizations like the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Earth Institute and Rotary International ? of garnering $500 million in commitments to help fight poverty.

So now what?

Evans said that he's hoping the audience, built online and at the concert, will continue efforts by tweeting President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to halve extreme poverty by 2015, which is the key U.N. anti-poverty goal. And Evans is working on an announcement in October or November about "a major rock band" getting involved with the anti-poverty efforts.

Grieving Pet Owners Want Imported Dog Treats Pulled From Shelves

Rita Desollar believes chicken jerky treats imported from China killed her German shepherd, Heidi. Rita Desollar

Rita Desollar believes chicken jerky treats imported from China killed her German shepherd, Heidi.

The Food and Drug Administration isn't sure, but Rita Desollar of Pekin, Ill., feels she knows what killed Heidi, her 7-year-old German shepherd. She feels it was the chicken jerky strips she bought at her local Walgreen's.

Desollar says on the Wednesday before Memorial Day, she gave two pieces of Waggin' Train jerky to Heidi as a treat. A few days later, Heidi was throwing up and "in a lot of distress," she says. By the time the holiday rolled around on Monday, Desollar says, Heidi was convulsing in her bed. She died that day, before Desollar could even take her to the vet.

"I didn't know what happened or why," she tells The Salt. "I got on the Internet and I typed into Google 'What killed my dog?' What came up took my breath away."

?

Desollar found dozens of posts on various websites from people who claim their dogs got sick from eating the same types of chicken jerky treats - all of them imported from China. She also discovered that the FDA was conducting an active investigation into these treats, but the agency has not found any direct evidence that the treats are causing a problem, so it has not issued any recalls. It has issued three warnings to consumers about the products, most recently in November of last year.

There haven't been recalls because the FDA hasn't officially concluded that there's anything wrong with these imported pet treats. Though it has received more than 2,000 complaints about them in the past five years, the FDA's tests haven't turned up any contaminant or adulterant in the treats that would give it a reason to issue a mandatory recall. However, the agency has posted some questions and answers about its investigation of the treats.

The FDA didn't respond to our inquiries, but an FDA official recently told a conference of veterinarians that concerns about the treats might be overblown.

"Two thousand complaints since 2007 is an incredibly small subset of the 15 million animals estimated to consume these treats," Dr. Tracy DuVernoy, with the FDA's Coordinated Outbreak Response and Evaluation Network, said last month.

DuVernoy didn't rule out a contamination. But she told the veterinarians that, if there is something wrong with the dog treats, it's something the FDA's scientists haven't been able to pin down. "Since a lot has been ruled out," she said, "it might be a very intricate sort of biological response."

DuVernoy was quoted in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medicine Association's web coverage of the conference.

The Waggin' Train company says its treats are safe. "The FDA has been looking at this since 2007 and they've been very clear that they haven't found any contaminant," says Keith Schopp, a spokesman for the brand.

While the FDA waits and conducts more testing, Desollar doesn't want retailers to wait. A few weeks ago, she created an online petition demanding that Walgreen's, Walmart, Kroger and other retailers yank the treats off their shelves. Within less than a month, the petition has garnered more than 60,000 signatures.

We contacted several of the retailers on Desollar's list. They said they're waiting to take action until the FDA comes to an official conclusion about whether the pet treats are safe or not.

But Desollar says, at the very least, the stores should give their customers full information about what's already happened.

"Just tell me it's under FDA investigation," she says. "I'll make the decision."

Own Ward, Bay View Gallery Night 2012 ? Local Trolley

Cramming activities into the last clement days of the year isn?t too difficult in Milwaukee and no neighborhood rises to the occasion quite like Bay View. There?s the South Shore Farmers Market and The Frolics. There was Pabst Fest and Bay View Bash, Art Beat, that other crap I?m missing, and now Bay View Gallery Night, which kicks off tomorrow night. Yes, a Gallery Night so cool it happens a full month before the rest of the City?s.

On the serrated butter knife?s edge of this madness, Made in Milwaukee and Alchemist Theatre safely press their pointy little teeth into Milwaukee?s penchant for creative to-do?s du jour. Bay View?s abundance of venues and pop-up cultural dioramas basically will allow you to just walk down KK without a plan. But here are a few places and artists to see.

Alchemist Theatre and Bay View Lounge

They co-sponsor the night and will have photography of Shane Gardner on the walls and music of Todd Richards and the Surround Sound Experiment in the ether. What?s coolest about this stop? The Alchemist Theatre has a chic/cheeky dive concept lounge rarely open when no show is on-stage.

If you?re not sure about theatre, you can at least absorb one of the best social atmospheres Milwaukee has to offer without committing a couple hours to stage entertainment. If you like it enough, you can vamp back in for the Alchemist?s upcoming Hollowed Eve themed freak-you-out live theatrical production The Alchemist Eye.

Amanda Iglinski at the Hide House

Usually all sorts of craziness goes on at the Hide House like church services and improvised musical shows. Most of that will probably still be going on tomorrow night and among others Amanda Iglinski?s works will perch on the Hide House?s interior vertical planes as a part of the first floor display. She?s a tremendous pop artist with intriguing vision that melds social commentary to the craft of picking images, motifs and colors to blend.

The Hide House will also have exhibits and B-Boy performances from the TRUE Skool camp, Bay View Arts Guild, Sara Risley, music, art studio open houses and egg rolls from Mamma?s Eggrolls.

Gao Gallery

Resident artist Jenie Gao will open her space to feature artwork of her contemporaries Steph Davies, Laura Macias Barrera, Zina Mussman, Rachel Quirk and live music.

Gao Gallery occasionally offers instructional art workshops. Stop by during Bay View Gallery Night and you?ll be able to screenprint a ready made design on one of your own garments or a T that you can purchase there. Jenie Gao?s star as a fine art purveyor is in full bloom and something to gaze upon for seeing what it looks like to go beyond just having talent in a particular medium.

Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing

Ink?s abound in this town, why stop now? I see calf tats are in. Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing will wet their needles publicly for the grand ole? first time, opening on BVGN?s expressive ocean swell. The Mil can?t get enough ink, how can you blame us, most of us live where our bodies are at the moment anyway.

The Rest Are The Best Anyway

If I were to drop a few more names for thirst quenching pit stops let?s jus throw Studio Lounge, Black Bird Bar, Boon and Crockett, Hector?s and Club Giribaldi out there arbitrarily. Bay View Gallery Night?s website has the full listing happenings complete with proper addresses and other vital information. I also hear that the new super brilliant Alterra will have a parking lot extavaganza of sorts to top it all with a mango.

Raleigh-Durham police determined that no blows were exchanged and no one was arrested.

United spokeswoman Christen David says the two employees were removed and the?flight?re-staffed. David said the Chicago-based airline is conducting an internal review and that the argument was not physical.

Some passengers were placed on other?flights, and David said United would compensate passengers for their inconvenience.

Honey bees fight back against Varroa

Friday, September 28, 2012

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the recent mysterious death of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology finds that specific proteins, released by damaged larvae and in the antennae of adult honey bees, can drive hygienic behavior of the adults and promote the removal of infected larvae from the hive.

V. destructor sucks the blood (hemolymph) of larval and adult bees leaving them weakened and reducing the ability of their immune systems to fight off infections. Not that honey bees have strong immune systems in the first place since they have fewer immunity genes than solitary insects such as flies and moths. These tiny mites can also spread viral disease between hosts. This double onslaught is thought to be a significant contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

But all is not lost - honey bees have evolved a way to fight back: hygienic behavior where diseased or parasitized larvae are removed from their brood cells, and Varroa-sensitive hygienic behavior which they use to reduce the number of reproductive mites on remaining larvae.

To find exactly how bees respond to hive infections, researchers from Canada looked at the natural behavioral of bees in the presence of damaged larvae and compared this to protein differences in the larvae and adults. After scanning 1200 proteins the team found that several proteins, including LOC552009 (of unknown function but similar to ApoO), found in the antennae of adults were associated with both uncapping brood cells and the removal of larvae. Other proteins were involved in olfaction or in signal transduction, probably helping the adults find infected larvae amongst a brood.

In damaged larvae, transglutaminase, a protein involved in blood clotting, was upregulated, which appeared to be a key component in regulating the adult's behavior. Other proteins indicated adaptations to help fight infection, including chitin biosynthesis and immune responses.

Dr Leonard Foster from CHIBI at the University of British Columbia, who led this research said, "Bee keepers have previously focused on selecting bees with traits such as enhanced honey production, gentleness and winter survival. We have found a set of proteins which could be used to select colonies on their ability to resist Varroa mite infestation and can be used to find individuals with increased hygienic behavior. Given the increasing resistance of Varroa to available drugs this would provide a natural way of ensuring honey farming and potentially survival of the species."

Online Fraud Protection ? A Vital Business Imperative - PDF

Online Fraud Protection - A Vital Business Imperative

Today's computing environment is a lot more sophisticated than it was a few years ago. With
the Internet becoming a way of life, there has been a tremendous increase in the online
population. This in turn has also exponentially increased the fraudulent activity. E-commerce
has brought consumers lower prices, incredibly diverse choices and an ease of buying that
simply cannot be matched in the physical world.

This has also given rise to many global enterprises that deal with counterfeit and grey market
sales. When you run a business online, it's important to know what to look out for, and what
you can do to protect your business and customers from fraud. Being forewarned is being
forearmed, says the old adage, and that is certainly the policy that businesses need to adopt in
the area of Internet security. The job of securing a business and its users against online fraud
can be a trial by fire, fraught with challenges.

It is important for an enterprise to take adequate steps to protect the firm against potential
exposure. To help combat possible frauds, the first priority ought to be implementing the
right technology. An enterprise can proactively prevent fraud with a solution that has speedy
performance in a real-time environment. Enterprises need to know about the online fraud
protection solutions that are available to them, as these solutions have to be proactive, to
tackle the problem.

Make sure the solution you select, can function and scale without issues, under demanding
traffic loads. Enterprises can become more proactive and reduce the impact of counterfeits in
their company, by adopting strong and efficient online fraud management solutions.

Many companies employ online fraud detection solutions which merely consist of manual or
semi-automated scouring of the Internet. Although enterprises use online monitoring solutions
for detecting trademark violations, they are still unable to identify the products that are the

targets for fraud and the ones who are perpetrating the fraud. It is therefore important to
invest in a comprehensive SaaS-based online fraud protection solution that can monitor a
wide variety of sites globally. Such anti-fraud solutions help identify the suspect data and help
manufacturers to place a number of countermeasures in motion.

As it can adversely affect their brand and business, it is best to choose a solution provider that
has multiple deployment and integration options available, who can offer suitable solutions
that aptly fit the needs in your environment.

Silva says it wasn't just some hamburgers on the grill affair, but a true Brazilian gaucho barbecue. Sonnen now has his sights on UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and he's forgotten all about his pal Andy.

La Jolla Cove - Sport & Recreation Photos - A LEFT-EYED VIEW

Posted by Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 25 September 2012 in Sport & Recreation and Portfolio.

La Jolla Cove is a cove and a beach in La Jolla, San Diego, California. It is a very small beach within walking distance from the Children's Pool Beach. Scripps Park, a grassy area commonly used for picnicking, is located on the bluffs above the beach.

La Jolla Cove is popular for swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling. However, since La Jolla Cove is within the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park (a marine refuge area), swimming devices such as surfboards, boogie boards, and even inflatable mattresses are not permitted, and this rule is carefully enforced by the lifeguards, specifically in the part of the area defined as the Ecological Reserve.

The La Jolla Cove is home to the annual La Jolla Cove Rough Water swim. This is one of the oldest ocean swims in the world.

No fishing or collecting of marine invertebrates, (even taking dead specimens or seashells) is allowed. All sea animals in this area are protected by law, including the orange Garibaldi fish, which are unusually common in the Cove.

Republicans to Pollsters: Too Many Democrats In Your Surveys

It has become a recurring refrain among some Republican pundits and observers each time a new poll shows President Obama or downballot Democrats doing well: Check the party composition.

Critics allege that pollsters are interviewing too many Democrats -- and too few Republicans or independents -- and artificially inflating the Democratic candidates' performance. Pollsters counter that the results they are finding reflect slight changes in public sentiment -- and, moreover, adjusting their polls to match arbitrary party-identification targets would be unscientific.

Unlike race, gender or age, all demographic traits for which pollsters weight their samples, party identification is considered an attitude that pollsters say they should be measuring. When party identification numbers change, it's an indication of deeper political change that a poll can spot.

"If a pollster weights by party ID, they are substituting their own judgment as to what the electorate is going to look like. It's not scientific," said Doug Schwartz, the director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, which doesn't weight its surveys by party identification.

The debate has been amplified as the pace of public polling has accelerated after party conventions. Pollsters are finding diverging results, with consumers of political media left to decide which surveys better reflect the reality on the ground -- or to accept the polls most favorable to their partisan leanings. New, less expensive methods for taking polls have led to a proliferation of surveys with varying results, so both sides have ample data to fit their desired narrative.

Gripes about the party-ID composition of poll samples are certainly not new: Eight years ago, Democrats were claiming polls showing a surge in Republican identification did not accurately reflect the makeup of the electorate.

Now, it's Republicans making the case their voters are undersampled.

Schwartz, whose institute conducts polls in battleground states for CBS News and The New York Times, asserts that pollsters who weight according to party identification could miss the sorts of important shifts in the electorate that could be determinative.

"A good example for why pollsters shouldn't weight by party ID is if you look at the 2008 presidential election and compared it to the 2004 presidential election, there was a 7-point change in the party ID gap," Schwartz said. Democrats and Republicans represented equal portions of the 2004 electorate, according to exit polls. But, in 2008, the percentage of the electorate identifying as Democrats increased by 2 percentage points, to 39 percent, while Republicans dropped 5 points, to 32 percent.

Asked specifically about GOP complaints regarding the party-ID composition of public surveys, Schwartz said: "They're the ones trailing in our swing-state polls."

"There are more people who want to identify with the Democratic Party right now than the Republican Party," he added.

Many Republicans, however, think pollsters are wrong to assume their results, which in some cases mirror the 2008 electorate, are accurate.

"Far too many of the public and media polls have set their likely voter screens and models to something looking more optimistic than the 2008 turnout model," GOP consultant Rick Wilson wrote in Sunday's New York Daily News, "which even Obama's most dedicated partisans think is highly unlikely."

John McLaughlin, a Republican pollster and consultant to GOP candidates, told the conservative National Review last week that Democrats are lobbying media pollsters "to weight their surveys to emulate the 2008 Democrat-heavy models."

"The intended effect is to suppress Republican turnout through media polling bias," McLaughlin said.

Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., is unconvinced. "Why would pollsters want to look inaccurate?" Miringoff asked rhetorically in a phone interview.

Miringoff, who is conducting three battleground-state polls each week for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal, called the focus on party identification "too narrow."

"It's an easy target in a sense because you can look at the last [election], see the difference and jump on board," he said. Marist, like Quinnipiac, does not weight its results according to party ID.

Not every Republican pollster finds fault with the publicly-available surveys. Dan Judy, vice president of North Star Opinion Research in Alexandria, Va., told National Journal, "A lot of the media organizations this cycle seem to have gotten better."

"Most of the media polls are good, professional polls," Judy added, "in terms of making sure that the way their samples are constructed are fairly consistent."

But the GOP narrative that most public surveys are biased endures. On Monday, the news website Buzzfeed interviewed a Virginia-based blogger who re-weights public polls to reflect the partisan trends reported by automated pollster Rasmussen Reports. Dean Chambers, the blogger, then presents the adjusted data in charts on his website, unskewedpolls.com.

As of late Monday, Chambers' website claimed that an average of polls conducted since Labor Day show Mitt Romney leading Obama, 52 percent to 44 percent. The website and its findings were trumpeted on the Drudge Report, the conservative-leaning news-aggregation site that has tended to highlight polls more favorable to Romney and less favorable to the president.

The pollsters continue to stand by their results, but the complaints are nevertheless getting through. Marist's Miringoff, for instance, was lambasted by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt earlier this month over a poll in Hewitt's native Ohio that the radio jock deemed "biased" for its 10-point party-ID advantage for Democrats. Miringoff admitted to National Journal that he is now taking note of the party-identification results in the polls he is conducting.

"I look at our party-ID spread because I want to anticipate the reaction," he said. He added: "I guess it makes for good pundit sport at this point."

Oregon college students will compete at creating problem-solving ?social businesses?

Teams of university students will compete to tackle Oregon?s social and environmental problems this fall through creation of problem-solving companies, or so-called social businesses.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh ? known globally as the inventor of microlending ? will be on hand to inspire the Oreg?on students and present the prize to the winning team.

The aim is to develop creative, practical business responses to the most pressing local and regional problems, according to the Oregon University System, which is sponsoring the event.

?Instead of anticipating that government will solve everything, it?s about having business, philanthropy and entrepreneurship students come together and figure out solutions,? said Bridget Burns, Oregon University System chief of staff. ?It?s such an exciting moment for this state.?

Yunus agreed to forgo his customary $125,000 speaker?s fee as long as Burns could find 1,000 Oregonians to attend the competition on Oct. 1 at the Orego?n Convention Center. Gov. John Kitzhaber is scheduled to speak, and Secretary of State Kate Brown is the event?s master of ceremonies.

At least one University of Oregon team has signed up to participate.

Yunus pioneered the concept of using market forces in the service of the poor. He began a bank in 1983 in his home country that loaned small amounts without collateral to impoverished women to start or build businesses. He maintains that all human beings are without exception endowed with entrepreneurial spirit. His concept of micro finance spread around the globe.

Yunus advocates building small businesses that are not charities and that have a social or environmental objective, operate in a financially sound manner, return their investor?s principal (sans interest), treat the workforce well ? and do it all with joy.

?Part of the benefit of running the enterprise is being subjected to market forces and having that response of the market and the discipline that comes from that ? and being able to make adjustments in the work, in the operations, in the marketing, in the business, to best address the needs of the customers,? said Cindy Cooper, cofounder and director of the Impact Entrepreneurs program at Portland State University.

Yunus worked with international corporations on their social business lines: adidas made shoes that sell in developing companies for about $1.25 to protect children from diseases and injuries; French company Groupe Danone (Dannon in the United States) developed a low-cost yogurt to be produced in Bangladesh to reduce childhood malnutrition.

?A typical business might feel like profit is elevated to the most important status. Social businesses really don?t feel like that. Profit, people and the planet have equal status of importance,? said Amanda West, a UO graduate and cofounder of EcoZoom, a certified social ?benefit? corporation.

The Portland-based EcoZoom commercializes stoves developed at the Aprovecho Research Center at Cottage Grove.

Four 31-year-olds ? including a couple of UO MBAs and a planning and management graduate, together chipped in $40,000 in April 2011 to launch the business. The revenues so far are $1.6 million, West said, and the company had a $5,000 profit last month.

?I know it doesn?t sound like a lot, but for social businesses it?s even harder to turn profitable,? West said.

EcoZoom?s social purposes are to reduce lung disease and deforestation associated with the open cook fires that 3 billion people in developing countries still use.

EcoZoom would like the option of organizing under state law as a social benefit corporation, but Oregon?s law has no provision for that entity type. Traditionally organized businesses have a fiduciary responsibility to maximize profits for shareholders ? even when that?s in conflict with the company?s social goals.

Eleven states, including California and Hawaii, have passed laws allowing the creation of so-called B Corp business entities. Two other states have similar laws in the works, according to B Lab, a Pennsylvania nonprofit agency that promotes the business form. The B Corp format allows the entity to deviate from the pursuit of profit.

?Legally, you can have a commitment to the triple bottom line, so legally you can make decisions in the best interest of personal impact, environmental impact and financial impact,? West said.

Absent an enabling law in Oregon, EcoZoom chose to get B Corp certification from B Lab, which requires demonstrated focus on the social or environmental goal and workplace and community activism.

This hybrid business/charity form appeals to young entrepreneurs, West said. The old idea was a business person would ?learn, earn and return.? That?s learn the ropes in school and in business; earn as much money as possible; and then, return by contributing to the community at retirement, she said.

?Our generation is more about having impact when you?re in your career,? West said. ?This is where our generation wants to take business. For a long time, we?ve seen all the negative effects that business can have.

?We?re interested in making an impact in the world but also in making a profit. We?re not necessarily taking a vow of poverty to make an impact on the world.?

Last year, Georgia was the first state to stage a social business competition. In October, at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, teams from 38 colleges and universities presented their business plans based on Yunus? social business principles.

Entrants took aim at domestic violence, adult illiteracy, unemployment and lack of housing. The winning entry, from a nine-student team from Southern Polytechnic State University at Marietta, was a micro lending business, dubbed Restoration Trust, that would make small loans to victims of domestic violence to rent apartments or buy cars, or other things to help them start fresh.

?It made the students really think about all the aspects of starting an organization,? Donald Ariail, an accounting associate professor who advised the students. He said the concept of social business resonated with the team. ?They were very enthused about it. That?s why they won actually ? because of their enthusiasm, as much as any thing else,? he said.

Since the contest, four of the nine students have gone on to launch a nonprofit organization to make small loans to women in a YMCA domestic violence shelter. They couldn?t quite make the for-profit lending work, Ariail said.

?It?s difficult to find investors for a social business who were ready to give us money,? he said.

In Oregon, so far, about 14 teams ? including representatives from all seven public universities ? have signed up to compete, and Burns expects more by the Monday deadline.

Two UO teams have signed up so far, a team of undergraduates and another made up of MBA students.

UO MBA student Mikaela Hicks said socially oriented business plans are right up her alley because she?s on the UO?s sustainable business track. ?Businesses have the power to create positive impact on profits, planet and people,? she said.

She?s on a five-member team that?s dreaming up a venture for the competition. ?Right now were homing in on some ideas, trying to see if they?d be viable,? Hicks said.

Social Business

Nobel Peace Prize-winner Muhammad Yunus defines social business by these seven principles:

1: Business objective will be to overcome poverty, or one or more problems (such as education, health, technology access, and environment) which threaten people and society, not to make a profit

2: The company will attain financial and economic sustainability

3: Investors get back their investment amount ? no dividend is given beyond the original investment

4: When investment amount is paid back, profit stays with the company for expansion and improvement

5: The company will be environmentally conscious

6: Work force gets market wage with better-than-standard working conditions

7: Do it with joy

The Challenge

The Oregon Social Business Challenge is a competition of teams vying to create the most effective business

When and where: 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland

Deadline: Monday for teams to register and submit business plans

Prison Planet.com ? Chalk Writing The New Terrorism

Prisonplanet.com
Sept 25, 2012

Amy Larson readily admits writing ?9/11 Truth? and ?9/11 Truth Now? in chalk on the First Street sidewalk over Napa Creek.

?I just want people to think for themselves,? said Larson, 29. ?I believe we?ve lost a lot of civil liberties since the 9/11 attacks. I?m really concerned about that.

?This is political free speech,? added Larson, who says the investigation into the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. should be reopened.

Her chalk writing ? which occurred Sept. 11, the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks ? got Larson arrested on suspicion of vandalism.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is challenging the international community to confront the root causes of turmoil in the Middle East, saying the world faces "a choice between the forces that would drive us apart and the hopes we hold in common."

Obama was speaking to the United Nations General Assembly, saying the United States will not shrink from its role with nations under transition despite the killing of four Americans in Libya, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, and more than 50 people in violence tied to an anti-Muslim film.

Obama says the video is an "insult not only to Muslims, but to America as well."

The president opened his address Tuesday with a tribute to Stevens, saying the diplomat "saw dignity in the people he met."

Gilbert Melendez injury causes Strikeforce to cancel Saturday?s card

Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez was hit with an injury just a week before he was scheduled to fight Pat Healy. He had to withdraw from the fight. Without Healy-Melendez, Showtime decided not to air the card. Without Showtime, Strikeforce canceled the event.

"When Showtime informed us that it would not be airing the event, we made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday's card in Sacramento," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said via press release. "Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event. We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards."

This is the second major injury to hit Strikeforce recently. UFC heavyweight Frank Mir pulled out of his Nov. 3 bout with Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champ Daniel Cormier with an injury.

Healy told Bloody Elbow Radio that he was told he would not be fighting again until Melendez is healthy, and that he wasn't given the option to fight someone else.

"I'm like in a daze, still. I have to think about, if Gil's going to be out six months and I have to wait the whole time, I have to start making some plans to make money right now so I'm not in a situation where I have to make money right before training for a fight," Healy said.

Outside of Melendez Healy, Saturday's card featured:

Guto Inocente vs. Gian Villante
Caros Fodor vs. Josh Thomson
Adriano Martins vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg
Quinn Mulhern vs. Jorge Santiago
Jorge Gurgel vs. Mizuto Hirota
Amanda Nunes vs. Cat Zingano
Mike Kyle vs. Dion Staring
Nah-Shon Burrell vs. Yuri Villefort
Michael Bravo vs. Estevan Payan

Those fighters didn't create enough firepower for Showtime. Perhaps a re-airing of the "Weeds" season finale will be enough for the network instead of a live sporting event.

This creates a problem for the Strikeforce fighters on the card. One of the complaints heard most often from Strikeforce fighters is that they don't fight enough. In 2012, Strikeforce has held just five fight events. With such infrequency, fighters have few chances to fight and make money from their fight purse and sponsors.

Outside the main event, Strikeforce has nine fights place. Though there is room on the Nov. 3 card, it won't be enough to accommodate every fighter. Plus, the fighters thought they were getting paid on Sept. 29, and best case scenario has them getting paid a month from now. Fighting is never an easy way to make a living, but cancelling cards in the last minute makes the job much harder.

Lavin missed most of the 11-12 season while undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.?

"I can tell that I'm closer to being back to a level of health that I was at prior to the treatment," Lavin said. "Naturally, I still have to be vigilant on the health front -- as we all do when we get older, or coming off something like a battle with cancer. But I clearly feel in a better place in terms of my stamina, my strength, my conditioning."

Guarantor Financial loans Vs . Unsecured Loans from banks | My Blog

Posted by BrodzikBusboom629 on Sep 22, 2012 in ANIMAL | Comments Off

Banks are secured collectors plus they give over cash with straightforward answers to the actual customer. However, financial institutions furthermore choose a settlement ensure. Guarantor financial loans are usually well suited for those who have before encounter downside to their particular credit rating. They could improve their personal credit record as well, if the settlement is completed properly.

Guarantor lending options entail a third person. This kind of next individual should have a favorable credit background. They?re usually somebody who possess a residence, generate more than ?800 and are also among Twenty-three and also 70 years of age. Such a great situation, the normal quantity that?ll be of course for the customer is all about ?5000. Nevertheless, the quantity is based on the evaluation with the credit history with the guarantor and many risk factors. In the event the guarantor himself has taken a loan or mortgaged his / her house then a banking institutions is going to take this kind of factor into consideration. The role of the guarantor inside the complete deal is very simple. They usually don?t hear from the lender when the consumer is able to pay off the credit in time. Nevertheless, when the applicant doesn?t pay back the quantity inside time period, next under the agreement from the guarantor financial loans, the particular guarantor is liable to cover the borrowed funds quantity along with the interest and all some other costs.

In contrast to the unsecured loans, in which the candidate alone is likely for many fees about the loan, underneath the guarantor mortgage the actual guarantor gets accountable for repayment as they have got stood as surety. It?s a large obligation which is why solely those which know the candidate strongly enough might consent to function as the guarantor for this particular loans.

Under the unique circumstances, it really is observed that banking institutions are usually leaving offering heavy funds to people. Banks are actually able to spend that towards the organizations, which subsequently lend the cash to folks. Nonetheless, financial institutions usually are not ready to directly provide funds towards the consumer, especially on an unsecured foundation.

Along with short term loans such as pay day loans, the amount is going to be limited, the particular payment term very quick and also the rate of interest very high, and also other costs. Defaulting or slowing down repayment can lead to nonetheless much more costs getting extra upon and also the customer is going to be with high risk of finding yourself paying often times more the total amount they?ve got lent. Therefore the customer has to take into account all phrases carefully before signing the agreement for this type of bank loan. This loan should be considered being a temporary, cease gap set up simply as well as sufficient cash flow needs to be set up to fulfill responsibilities.

I was so moved in what I have learned about this on the main site, consequently I had to write my views about it. To get further amazing information regarding this short article, ensure to look at click here or guarantor loans. (28)

Justice: DVNO [Video]

Off Justice's 2007 debut ?, DVNO is terrific dance of a tune. There's really not much to say about it other than it's a catchy, upbeat dance/disco/electro-house(?) joint with a fantastic bass-line. It came up on my shuffle and I had to pass along the love. Just listen to it. And then listen to it again. Lather, rinse, repeat. More »
