The Oscars "In Memoriam" tribute always creates some controversy, and this year was no exception.

Every year,?someone finds fault with the Oscars? "In Memoriam" tribute honoring those who passed away?over the course of the year. Usually the criticism falls on one or two entertainers who died in the past year and are left out. There was some of that this year, but a bigger focus was the new, less frenetic style of the tribute.

The?tribute was set to a soulful, cool performance of Louis Armstrong?s ?What a Wonderful World,? as sung by Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding, and included homage to, most notably, Elizabeth Taylor, Whitney Houston, Peter Falk, Jackie Cooper, and Steve Jobs. The full list can be seen here.

Unlike ceremonies? past, this year?s arrangement was mostly a series of slides featuring images of honorees, rather than a montage of film clips. There were a few audio and video excerpts sprinkled throughout, but overall, the tribute was silent except for Spalding's song.

The decision was met with mixed reviews among viewers of the broadcast. Some appreciated the serenity of the piece, claiming it was the most beautiful yet, while others?wondered if?the Oscar staff was too lazy to sort through video clips.

Lisa Milne tweeted, ?Wow quietest in memoriam ever #Oscar very nice.?

Ethan Anderton, an editor at FirstShowing.Net,?tweeted, "Someone didn't want to dig through video clips for the In Memoriam montage this year. #lazy."

Elizabeth (Elle)?felt otherwise, saying, ?Dear #Oscar, Don't save time by cutting corners on the memoriam. Give them the final moment they are due.?

And Christina Lynn adds, ?My new goal in life is to join The Academy and create better "In Memoriam" videos for the show."

Many had been wondering how the Academy would honor late pop singer and actress Whitney Houston, who died Feb. 11. Houston. who of course was better known as a singer although she did star in films, was included with a photo, but some felt it wasn't enough.

A commenter going by txguy101?wrote on the Academy?s official blog, ?What, no sound bites, clips or anything of Whitney Houston other than a black/white face pic?!....Cliff Roberson, Elizabeth Taylor and a few others had screen shots, sound bites and whatnots.??

Of course, there was also dissatisfaction with those left off the list. Perhaps the most famous name left out was that of Harry Morgan, who while best known as Col. Sherman T. Potter on TV's "M*A*S*H" also starred in more than 100?films, including "The Ox-Bow Incident" and "High Noon."

Other entertainers not seen in the tribute included Ryan Dunn of "Jackass," Charles Napier of "Rambo," stuntman Bob Anderson who handled the sword work for Darth Vader in "Star Wars," and costume designer Eiko Ishioka (?Dracula?).

Homeless, needy find compassion and help with aid of The Community Foundation

SAN BERNARDINO - The number of homeless and needy families showing up at Cornerstone Compassion Center for a bag of groceries has jumped about 30 percent in the past two years.

It's a familiar story for charity groups around the country as the economy continues to struggle.

"In the last two years, we've definitely seen more working families that are having to rely upon us for help," said Robin Hyde, executive director for the center.

But a group that helps charities - The Community Foundation - actually had the best fundraising year in its 70-year history in 2011. And that's good news for organizations such as Cornerstone, which has received about $1,800 from the foundation in the last 18 months.

of that donation translates to around 2,400 boxes of cereal, or two months of keeping the food pantry's refrigerators and freezers running, Hyde said.

The Community Foundation, which serves San Bernardino and Riverside counties, raised $9.1 million in grants and donations last year.

The foundation connects financial donors with charities. It distributes grant money to nonprofit groups and scholarships to students, and funds various projects centering on the arts, family and health, among other issues.

Foundation CEO Daniel Foster said the 2008 stock-market crash forced the organization to re-examine its business model.

They've received support from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to examine why other areas of Southern California receive a higher level of grants than the Inland Empire.

Foundation officials have gathered economic and quality-of-life data for the region to make their case for why more grants are needed for local charities.

"We are working on developing grant initiatives to develop more and better grants for our region," Foster said.

Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (Intel Core i7-3930K)

If you're in the market for a gaming rig, chances are you're either going in with a budget in mind or looking for the best, most tricked-out system money can buy. The Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (Intel Core i7-3930K) ($4,999 direct) fits the latter category and is not a gaming desktop for the miserly; it features Intel's latest Sandy Bridge-E series processor, which alone has a market price of $555, and two Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 graphics cards. In addition to its potent internal components, the Velocity Micro throws in such wireless features as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth?rare in custom gaming rigs.

Design and Features
The Raptor Z90 isn't small, but won't leave a Jolly Green Giant-sized footprint like the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X) ($6,899 direct, 4.5 stars). It's a full silver aluminum tower with a little more heft than a standard tower PC.

Looking inside the chassis through the clear side panel, the interior is lit up by several blue LEDs. It's spacious and clean, with enough room to fit two extra optical drives; two hard drives (two SATA ports for SSD caching are open on the motherboard); perhaps another graphics card in the extra PCIe x16 slot (though between the two Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 graphics cards it's a tight squeeze); and four more DIMM slots for RAM.

The unit has two 120GB solid-state drives and a 2TB spinning 7,200-rpm hard drive, built for speed and storage space. The Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 ($4,599 street, 4 stars) comes out ahead here, boasting two 120GB SSDs plus a 3TB spinning hard drive. There's a 1,200-watt power supply installed to help power all these components.

The Raptor Z90 comes with a total of 16GB of RAM, but once again the Polywell X7900i-3960 trumps it with a total of 32GB of RAM. The Raptor Z90 does, however, come equipped with more creature comforts, like 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (via a USB receiver), and a Blu-ray burner, whereas the Ignition X7900i-3960 has only a Blu-ray player.

There's no shortage of connectivity options. Behind a swinging aluminum door is a media-card reader supporting microSD, SD/MMC, xD, M2, CF/MD, and MS formats, as well as a solitary USB 2.0 port. The back has a USB BIOS Flashback port, six USB 2.0 ports (one occupied by the Bluetooth receiver), four USB 3.0 ports, two powered eSATA ports, a Gigabit Ethernet connection, two mini HDMI and four DVI-I video outputs, and S/PDIF and a multitude of audio jacks to hook up to a surround-sound system.

Performance
The Z90's 3.2GHz Intel Core i7-3930K processor chewed through any multi-core, CPU-intensive task we threw at it. It ran through our Photoshop CS5 script in 2 minutes 22 seconds, ahead of the Polywell X7900i-3960 (2:34) and a mere second slower than the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X) (2:21). The Z90 led the pack in Cinebench R11.5, scoring 13.33 points to the Polywell X7900i-3960's 12.15 and Falcon Northwest's 12.85.

When it came down to the Raptor Z90's raw power on the gaming grid, it easily produced playable frame rates on Crysis (121.3 fps and 44.6 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (155.9 fps and 80.8 fps) on 1,024 by 768 Medium and 1,920 by 1,080 Very High/High quality settings, respectively. In Crysis at Medium settings, it easily bested the Polywell X7900i-3960 (95 fps) and Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X) (118 fps), but lost footing to the competition when resolution, anti-aliasing, and quality settings were turned up?the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 (73 fps) and Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X) (75 fps) bested it by a significant margin.

On Lost Planet 2, the Raptor Z90 fell significantly behind the Polywell on Medium and High settings (210 fps and 122 fps, respectively) and Falcon Northwest (250 fps and 168 fps, respectively). Granted, the two competitors come with superior GPU configurations: two GeForce GTX 590 cards for the Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 and three GTX 580 cards for the Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X).

The Velocity Micro Raptor Z90 (Intel Core i7-3930K) comes bundled with a lot of nice features?a Blu-ray reader/writer, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth?and is a solid performer to boot. However, the honeymoon phase ends when comparing its raw gaming power to that of other systems. The Polywell Ignition X7900i-3960 comes with more memory and two Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 graphics cards, which helped garner higher frame rates over the Raptor Z90. But if you're looking for the best Sandy Bridge-E series gaming rig on the market, it's hard to beat the off-the-chart scores of the Editors' Choice Falcon Northwest Mach V (Core i7-3960X).

Supermassive black holes are cannibals, new research suggests

Astronomers have found black holes and supermassive black holes. But the discovery of a mid-size black hole could support the idea that supermassive black holes grow by eating others.

In a galaxy 290 million light-years away, a cosmic fugitive has emerged from hiding, bearing clues about how galaxies and the supermassive black holes at their centers evolve.

The fugitive:?the never-seen-before intermediate-sized black hole.

For three years, an international team of astronomers has had the elusive black hole under surveillance. The researchers now say they've found the strongest candidate yet for the mid-sized black hole, which may have been at the core of a dwarf galaxy that collided with a larger galaxy less than 200 million years ago.

If the analysis holds up, it would strengthen the notion that the black holes at the center of galaxies grow through collisions and mergers involving their host galaxies, just as the galaxies themselves are thought to grow. In the case of the fugitive, dubbed ESO 243-49 HLX-1, it's expected to eventually merge with the supermassive black hole at the center of its host galaxy.

A black hole is an object with gravity so strong that nothing can escape its grip, even when traveling at the speed of light. Astronomers have found convincing evidence that black holes, which form from the collapse of individual stars, exist. They've also found convincing evidence that supermassive black holes exist in the hearts of galaxies.

But questions remain about whether?intermediate-mass black holes exist, let alone about how they formed, notes Mathieu Servillat, an astrophysicist and member of the team reporting the results in the journal Astrophysical Review Letters.

Although the team has been studying HLX-1 as if it were an intermediate-mass black hole, astronomers have yet to agree on any candidate as the real deal. In the past eight years, two other groups have each identified a candidate. But the evidence for each failed to convince other researchers.

?If intermediate black holes exist, they would have an impact at different stages of the evolution of the universe,? says?Dr. Servillat, a researcher at France's National Center for Space Studies. ?At the very beginning, you have to form intermediate-mass black holes. Is this a giant star that is collapsing? Is this a number of stellar-mass black holes accumulating to become an intermediate black hole??

For now, the team's work may shed light on how a midsized black hole contributes to the growth of a supermassive black hole.

HLX-1 was discovered in 2009 by Sean Farrell, a researcher at the University of Sydney in Australia, and leader of the team reporting these latest results. It betrayed its presence through x-ray emissions that were extraordinarily bright. The emissions come from heating of dust and gas as it spirals in toward the black hole's point of no return.

HLX-1 was too bright to be a black hole formed from the collapse of a single star. The best match between what Dr. Farrell observed and theorists' models of black-hole behavior suggested a black hole with about 20,000 times the mass of the sun. Stellar black holes are thought to range from three to 80 solar masses. Supermassive black holes range from 1 million to more than 1 billion solar masses.

In addition, over the three years the team has monitored the object, it has brightened and dimmed roughly once a year. This suggests that a star may be swinging around the black hole in an elliptical orbit, losing matter to the black hole with each closest approach and causing it to flare.

Greece battles to salvage bailout package (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece's leaders battled to salvage a new 130-billion-euro ($170 billion) EU/IMF bailout on Wednesday, rejecting doubts over their commitment to a punishing austerity package just hours before a conference call of euro zone finance ministers.

But with mistrust of Athens high, several EU sources told Reuters that finance officials in the 17-state currency union were studying whether it was possible to delay part or all of the rescue deal while still avoiding a disorderly default - news which pushed safe haven German Bund futures to session highs.

Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos insisted that Greece would have clarified all outstanding issues on a 3.3-billion-euro package of cuts in time for a euro zone call scheduled for 1600 GMT, attacking critics in the zone for "playing with fire."

Greece's conservative party leader Antonis Samaras, widely tipped as the country's next prime minister, pledged in writing that if elected he would stick to an agreed program of welfare and job cuts that triggered riots in central Athens this week.

"If New Democracy wins the next election in Greece, we will remain committed to the programme's objectives, targets and key policies," Samaras wrote.

But Samaras, who leads voter surveys ahead of an election that could come as early as April, insisted the fast-shrinking Greek economy must also be kickstarted into life and reserved the right to adapt details of the package accordingly.

"Prioritizing recovery along with the other objectives will only make the program more effective and the adjustment effort more successful. Therefore ... policy modifications might be required to guarantee the full programme's implementation," he said in the letter to Greece's international lenders.

Greece has said it must initiate a debt swap deal with private sector bondholders by Friday to meet a March 20 deadline for 14.5 billion euros in debt repayments. It was hoping to have the euro zone's backing for its second bailout this week.

But EU sources said some in the euro zone doubted the commitment of Greece's leaders to austerity, and queried whether it would be enough to bring Greece's debt-to-GDP ratio down from 160 percent now to a target of 120 percent by 2020.

"There are proposals to delay the Greek package or to split it, so that an immediate default is avoided, but not everything is committed to," one official briefed on preparations for a euro zone finance ministers call later in the day told Reuters.

"They'll discuss the options," he said, adding: "There is pressure from several countries to hold off until there is a concrete commitment from Greece, which may not come until after they've held elections."

Samaras' belated commitment to honor the austerity plan may put that plan on the back burner.

The euro fell to its lowest in more than a week against the dollar and March Bund futures rose by as much as 60 ticks on the day to 139.12 after the Reuters report. The contract was last up 33 ticks up at 138.85.

"PLAYING WITH FIRE"

Venizelos earlier insisted there were "only a few remaining issues" to be resolved on the package of wage, pension and public sector job cuts lashed out at Greece's doubters.

"There are now powers in Europe who are obviously playing with fire because they believe ... that not all requirements will be met, and who may even want Greece out of the euro zone," he told reporters in Athens.

Rioters torched buildings across Athens late on Sunday as Greek lawmakers passed the austerity bill, of which around 325 million euros of cuts still need to be identified.

But after a series of broken promises since Athens was first bailed out in May 2010, trust is in short supply.

"When you look at the internal political discussions in Greece and the opinion polls, then you have to ask who will really guarantee after the elections ... that Greece will stand by what we are now agreeing with Greece," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told SWR2 radio.

"I am also not yet sure that all political parties in Greece are aware of their responsibility for the difficult situation their country is in," Schaeuble said, adding the EU remained committed to helping Greece if it honored its promises.

While the outcome of Wednesday's conference call hangs in the balance, European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen said approval by the Eurogroup at regular talks next Monday would allow a sovereign debt swap to be completed in time.

"If the Eurogroup (of euro zone finance ministers) is able to make a positive political decision next Monday, the bond swap with voluntary PSI (private sector involvement) can immediately begin and be completed in time," he told Reuters.

He further said in an emailed interview that while the ECB cannot contribute directly to the new Greek package, it could pass any profits from its sovereign bond purchases on to central banks in euro-zone states, which could then use it for Greece.

ALL EYES ON SAMARAS

Doubt had focused on Samaras, a strong critic of the austerity measures. He voted for the spending cuts but says the new round of austerity could plunge the country, already in its fifth year of recession, into an even bigger slump.

"It's true we are asking the Greeks for some extremely painful sacrifices and I understand their anger, but Greece has made many errors in its past," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told France Info radio on Wednesday.

"It (the bailout) must be concluded because if Greece went bankrupt and left the euro zone, the chaos would be even worse for the Greek people and very bad news for the euro zone."

The EU and IMF want Greece to account for every cent of budget cuts before they approve the rescue, which includes a bond swap, cutting the real value of private sector investors' bond holdings by some 70 percent.

But Greece's downward economic spiral has accelerated, making it even harder to cut its mountainous debt. Data on Tuesday showed that the economy shrank by seven percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of last year, even more than the five percent contraction of the third quarter.

Greece is well on its way to suffering one of the biggest slumps of modern history. Output has contracted 16 percent from its peak in 2008 and the cuts will inevitably make that worse.

Prime Minister Lucas Papademos has said that failure to back the bailout would consign Greece to economic catastrophe.

But with many Greeks suffering huge cuts in their living standards and young people burning and wrecking almost 100 Athens buildings in one night on Sunday, some people believe the catastrophe is already under way.
