Raspbmc 1.0 brings stable media center duties to your Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi

After a year of effort the Raspbmc team announced it has reached the 1.0 milestone. This means the team is confident they've delivered a stable distro to run the port of XBMC specifically designed to run on the Raspberry Pi, created by TeamXBMC, and the image is ready to be downloaded for free and copied to your ready and able SD card. If you were already enjoying the fruits of the early builds of Raspbmc, you'll need to do a complete re-install but that shouldn't be too much trouble since you probably store your content on a network drive or external USB.

Raspbmc 1.0 is based on the recently finished XMBC 12 Final and supports DTS decoding in software. This is in addition to many other codecs supported in software and you can purchase licenses from the Raspberry Pi Store for MPEG-2 and VC-1 hardware decoding for just a few bucks. A good move, since hardware decoding of today's most popular video codecs is almost certainly a requirement for any proper XBMC setup. Now, if the Raspbmc team would release their own custom case for the RPi then everyone would know what's going on just by looking under your TV.

Podcasting 101: What is podcasting? : Tech ELT Blog

Posted on | February 11, 2013 | No Comments

Coming this week, a series of posts with the content from my "Podcasting 101" talk at the IH Barcelona ELT Conference last weekend. Particularly if you came, do post comments, doubts etc, and I'll be happy to clarify them?

Image from my presentation: What is podcasting?

What is podcasting?
The terms podcast and podcasting come from the combination of the words ipod and broadcast, according to wiktionary.org, which defines a podcast as "an audio programme in a compressed digital format, delivered via an RSS feed over the Internet to a subscriber and designed for playback on computers or portable digital audio players, such as the iPod".

It should however be noted that it's not necessary to have an iPod in order to be able to listen to or create podcasts.

What it involves
Essentially podcasting involves the stages outlined in the slide, above, some of which we might skip for a language classroom, where we might want to simplify the process.

  1. Scripting and rehearsal
  2. Recording
  3. Editing which we could do if we were to download, install and configure Audacity, though personally I think it's far more productive for language learners to rehearse and re-rehearse and re-record, if necessary, rather than sit there silently editing
  4. Uploading the recording to the web (though we can amalgamate Stages 2-4 into one by using a site like SoundCloud.com
  5. Being found and listened to by an audience (for which iTunes is brilliant)
  6. Having people subscribe to our podcast (for which we would again want iTunes)
  7. Automatically "syncing" our iPod or other mobile device; having our computer download any new episodes of podcasts we've subscribed to
  8. Commenting on what we've listened to on the podcast's website

From the language learning point of view Stages 1 and 8 are the most interesting as that's where the most language practice really takes place.

If we skip Stage 3, and ? to keep things private, as we should ? don't concern ourselves with Stages 5, 6 and 7, either, we're left with a simpler version of podcasting optimised for use with language learners:

  1. Scripting and rehearsing
  2. Recording
  3. Sharing (digitally, online, preferable in a private space like Edmodo)
  4. Commenting (which can be done both online and face-to-face)

Over the next week, I'll be looking at the simplest possible tools our learners could use to create their own podcasts and suggesting tasks that will ensure language learning actually takes place.

Coming next: Active or passive podcasting?

India stampede kills 36 at world's largest religious festival

ALLAHABAD, India (Reuters) - A stampede at a railway station in northern India killed at least 36 Hindu pilgrims on Sunday, the busiest day of the world's largest religious festival at which some 30 million had gathered to wash away their sins in the sacred Ganges river.

Twenty-seven of the dead were women, mostly elderly and poor. An eight-year-old girl was also crushed to death. A Reuters witness saw a woman weeping at the train station, surrounded by six bodies dressed in brightly colored saris.

Up to 100 million pilgrims and Hindu ascetics are expected to attend the two-month long Kumbh Mela festival, which comes to an end next month.

It is held every 12 years in a temporary city covering an area larger than Athens, spread over a wide sandy river bank in Allahabad at the point where the Ganges and Yamuna rivers meet a third mythical river.

The festival grows in size every time it is held and is considered the world's largest temporary gathering of people. Officials said some 30 million visited the site on Sunday, considered the most auspicious day to bathe in the river.

Officials gave contradictory versions of what caused the crush. A railway official told Reuters police had been using batons to control the crowd, triggering panic. A state government official said a footbridge handrail collapsed, sending people slipping down the stairs and starting a stampede.

A spokesman for Indian railways said authorities had found 36 bodies and 30 people were injured. The injured were being treated at hospitals in Allahabad.

"Since there were huge crowds and a lot of panic, it took time before the bodies could be extricated," said another official, R. M. Srivastava, the top security official in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where the festival is held.

Deadly stampedes are common at India's vast pilgrimages and religious festivals. In 2008, 145 people died when a panicking crowd pushed people over a ravine near the Himalayan temple of Naina Devi.

Thousands of police and volunteers are used for crowd control during the Kumbh Mela, manning the river bank when the pilgrims and naked, dreadlocked ascetics dash into the water to bathe.

The festival has its roots in a Hindu tradition that says the god Vishnu wrested a golden pot from demons containing the nectar of immortality.

In a 12-day fight for possession, four drops fell to earth, in the cities of Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujain and Nasik. Every three years a Kumbh Mela is held at one of these spots, with the festival at Allahabad the holiest of them all.

More than 2,000 years old, the festival is a meeting point for Hindu "sadhu" ascetics, some of whom live in forests or Himalayan caves and who belong to dozens of inter-related congregations. The sects have their own administration and elect leaders, but are also known for violent clashes among themselves.

Meet the dogs of Westminster: Joey Bag A Donuts

Joey Bag A Donuts (Holly Bailey/Yahoo News)One in a series on show dogs and their owners.

NEW YORK?For every dog that wins at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, there are hundreds who don?t make the cut.

On Monday morning, one of those dogs was Joey Bag A Donuts, a black French Bulldog from Boston who was eliminated from a packed competition that featured more than 30 other dogs.

Joey, who has a brother named Mafia, seemed unfazed by his loss. Lounging at his purple-and-gold holding area, he posed for picture after picture taken by a steady group of fans. Only once did he yawn?and even that move elicited a coo of joy from one woman, who snapped at least a dozen photos of the Frenchie.

?He?s actually really tired,? Penny Wyatt, Joey?s handler, said, adding that they woke up at 4:30 a.m. to make it to the show.

Last weekend?s blizzard in the northeast had put a wrench in their travel plans, she said. Wyatt said she knew other dogs from Boston who had arrived late to the show because of the weather.

It was Wyatt?s second year at Westminster. Last year, she showed her own dog, but this year, she decided to handle Joey, who is owned by her friend Kerry Boyd, also an owner/handler.

?It can be tough for people like us here,? Wyatt said. ?It?s not like I'm a well-known professional handler that judges recognize, and that makes it hard sometimes. It can be very political.?

But, she added, ?I just come to have fun. For me, it?s about the experience. It?s an unbelievable experience.?

Although Joey was eliminated early, Wyatt said they would stick around for the full show. ?I love talking to people about French Bulldogs,? Wyatt said, as she gave Joey an ear massage. ?They are wonderful dogs. Just wonderful.?
