Inhabitat's Week in Green: Biobot, Nintendo Power Glove and an inflatable bathroom bubble

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green tktktk

This week President Barack Obama set the tone for the coming year in his 2013 State of the Union address, which advocated 3D printing and called for a speedy transition towards renewable energy to help combat climate change. The future of clean tech is already looking bright, as the world's solar power capacity just hit a record 101 gigawatts, and researchers found a new way to charge batteries by harvesting ambient electromagnetic waves from thin air. Speaking of batteries, a new lithium-ion battery developed by USC utilizes nano-sphere technology to store three times more energy while cutting charge time down to just 10 minutes. Clean tech is invading the kitchen as well -- behold the Biobot, a tabletop device that converts waste cooking oil into biodiesel.

Wrestling president quits after Olympic omission

PHUKET, Thailand (AP) - The president of the international wrestling federation quit Saturday in the wake of the IOC's decision to remove the sport from the 2020 Olympics.

Raphael Martinetti's resignation was announced at the FILA executive committee meeting in Phuket. The Swiss had been in the position since 2002.

On Tuesday, the executive board of the IOC dumped wrestling from the list of sports guaranteed a berth in future Summer Olympics, meaning it must compete with other fringe sports for a spot on the program.

FILA member Nenad Lalovic, who has assumed an interim presidency role, confirmed at a news conference that Martinetti's resignation was because of the International Olympic Council's decision.

"It was difficult for a president who wasn't powerful for 11 years when the IOC decided to eliminate his sport from the Olympic Games," said Lalovic, adding the new president will soon be elected at an extraordinary congress.

Lalovic said the bid to restore wrestling to the Olympic program would begin immediately.

"Every one of us will have a duty. We have only one goal that is to be back on the Olympics. Lobbying is very important but it's not something that you can't determine in advance," Lalovic said. "We have to prepare a serious presentation that must be prepared by professionals to present the real picture of our sport. This sport has been practiced by millions of people. We will use this fact in order to promote our sport."

Now wrestling is no longer a core Olympic sport, it must compete with seven other contenders - baseball and softball, squash, karate, wakeboarding, sport climbing, roller sports and the martial art of wushu - in lobbying to earn the last spot on the 28-sport program for the 2020 Olympics, which have yet to be awarded to a host city.

The IOC executive board will meet in May in St. Petersburg, Russia, to choose which sports to propose for inclusion in 2020. The final vote will be made at the IOC general assembly in September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

USA. Wrestling executive director Rich Bender paid tribute to Martinetti but said his departure could boost wrestling's chances of getting back on the Olympic program.

"This decision provides international wrestling with an opportunity to change and improve," Bender said in a statement on U.S.A. Wrestling's website. "The sport will now be able to create a fresh new relationship with the International Olympic Committee and address some of the pressing challenges and opportunities facing wrestling."

Alexander Mamiashvili, the head of the Russian wrestling federation, wants the FILA extraordinary congress to be held in Moscow in May and said President Vladimir Putin had ordered a committee be formed to contest the IOC decision.

"The group will coordinate and analyze the situation to prove wrestling is worthy of staying in the Olympic movement," Mamiashvili told the Itar-TASS news agency of a committee that will include the sports minister and all three Russian IOC members. "The leadership of the country, and personally the president of Russia, has expressed to us their support."

FILA vice president Stan Dziedzic said he knows what wrestling needs to do to win back its place.

"We need a better public-relations firm, we need to have a better relationship with the IOC, obviously. Those are right on top of the table," he said. "We have to tell the world that there is no other sport that is more of a meritocracy than wrestling. No bats, no balls, no gloves. It's not how fast, how far, how high - but how much better.

"Two equal size wrestlers ground on the mat to determine who the best is, with the wits and the will to win. Nothing could be more fundamental."

Royal Delta headlines Gulfstream?s President?s Day weekend

Gulfstream Park will have racing all three days on President?s Day weekend, starting with graded turf stakes the Mac Diarmida and The Very One on Saturday.

The weekend?s biggest attraction is two-time Breeders? Cup Ladies Classic winner Royal Delta, who will run in the $100,000 Sabin Stakes (Grade 3) at 1?1/16 miles on dirt for fillies and mares 4-years-old and up on Sunday.

Royal Delta is owned by Benjamin Leon Jr., the founder and chairman of Leon Medical Centers in Miami.

The race will be the first for the 5-year-old Royal Delta since last Nov. 2 when she won the Breeders? Cup Ladies Classic at Santa Anita Park. She won that race in 2011 at Churchill Downs.

Monday is usually a dark day at Gulfstream. But on President?s Day it will have ten races with first post time of 12:45 p.m.

The $100,000 Mac Diarmida (Grade 2) is for males 4-years-old and up and the $100,000 The Very One (Grade 3) is for fillies and mares 4-years-old and up.

Both are scheduled for 13/8 miles on turf. If wet conditions prevent turf racing, both will be 1?1/4 miles on dirt.

Because of heavy rain, Gulfstream did not have any turf races on Friday.

Barring heavy overnight rain, Gulfstream officials expect that Saturday?s two stakes will stay on the turf.

Newsdad is the 3-1 morning line favorite in the Mac Diarmida. He finished second in the race last year and later won the Pan American (Grade 2) at 1?1/2 miles on turf at Gulfstream. Both races were on turf listed as firm.

Teaks North, Nikki?s Sandcastle, Twilight Eclipse and Ioya Bigtime loom as challengers among the ten entrants.

On Jan. 19 at Gulfstream, Teaks North led gate to wire and won the 1?1/8 mile Florida Sunshine Miliions Turf Stakes on a yielding course. Several horses, including Ioya Bigtime and Twilight Eclipse, could challenge him for the lead on Saturday.

Starformer and Closing Range are likely favorites in the The Very One.

Bill Mott trains the weekend favorites Royal Delta, Newsdad and Starformer.

Pick 6 Carryover

On Saturday, Gulfstream will have a carryover of $2,605,671 on its Pick 6 bet on the last six races.

The bet is 10-cents only, with multiple horses permitted in each race.

Gulfstream pays out the entire Pick 6 pool including the carryover only on days when there is just one winning ticket.

When there are multiple winners, such as on Friday, they divide 60 percent of the day?s new bets. The other 40 percent goes into the carryover..

Hialeah Closing Weekend

Hialeah Park will end its Quarter Horse racing meet this weekend.

Hialeah will have eight races on Saturday and ten races on Sunday, with first post time of 2 p.m. each day. The feature race on Sunday is the $100,000 South Florida Quarter Horse Derby, at 440 yards for 3-year-olds.

Bankrupt San Bernardino hires new city manager

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Crisis-hit San Bernardino, California, picked a new city manager on Friday at a critical time in its quest to get bankruptcy protection from a federal court.

San Bernardino was forced to look for a new city manager after its acting city manager, Andrea Travis-Miller, quit.

Her resignation coincides with the departure of the city's finance chief. Both had been the key officials overseeing the city's bankruptcy application and their departures threaten the city's ability to achieve it. They had more knowledge than anybody else of the city's finances and the experience to answer questions from the court and creditors.

The city council voted to hire Allen Parker to replace Travis Miller. According to his resume provided to the city, Parker has been an economic development consultant since 2006.

From June 2001 until December 2006, according to his resume, Parker was chief administrative officer of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, a federally recognized tribe in California. Before that he was village manager of Maywood, Illinois.

The federal judge overseeing San Bernardino's bankruptcy application said in a court hearing on Tuesday that the new city manager would be confronted with a steep learning curve.

Various creditors are demanding a wealth of financial documents from the city. The city must also produce a detailed bankruptcy blueprint to explain how it intends to deal with its creditors, a key part of proving its eligibility for bankruptcy.

The city council considered two applicants for the job, and voted unanimously to hire Parker.

"Allen Parker brings a wealth of city management experience to San Bernardino," the mayor, Pat Morris said. "I have great confidence in his ability...to guide San Bernardino through the difficult decisions we must make in bankruptcy."

San Bernardino, a city of 210,000 about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, filed for bankruptcy protection on August 1, citing a $46 million deficit for the current fiscal year and little scope to meet its day-to-day expenses. It was the third California city to file for bankruptcy last year, following Stockton and Mammoth Lakes.

The city's biggest creditor, the California Public Employee Pension Fund (Calpers), has opposed San Bernardino's quest to seek bankruptcy protection. Without it, the struggling city will likely face multiple lawsuits in state court for unpaid bills, at a time when its officials say it can barely make payroll.

The city pegs its debt to America's biggest public pension fund at $143 million.

San Bernardino has not made its $1.2 million, twice monthly payment to Calpers since its bankruptcy declaration last August.

No city has ever unilaterally suspended payments to Calpers, which manages pension plans for state government employees and many municipalities and local government agencies around California.

The bankruptcy could be a test case as to whether the pensions of government workers take precedence over other payments in a municipal bankruptcy - a high-stakes issue for pension plans and their beneficiaries, and for the Wall Street bondholders who lend money to governments.

In a statement, Calpers said: "We are very pleased to have Mr. Parker stepping into his new role as city manager of San Bernardino and our executives have already reached out to him personally to welcome him and begin a dialogue with Calpers."

(AP) ? South Africa's national broadcaster will screen a reality TV show featuring the dead model girlfriend of Oscar Pistorius, it said Saturday, two days after she was shot and killed at the home of the double-amputee athlete and Paralympic superstar.

In a statement, SABC said it will air the Tropika Island of Treasure program "which features the late Reeva Steenkamp" on Saturday evening.

Pistorius was arrested and charged with the Valentine's Day murder of Steenkamp, who was shot multiple times in the predawn hours of Thursday at Pistorius' house in a gated community in the South African capital, Pretoria.

Reeva's cousin, Sharon Steenkamp, told The Associated Press later Saturday that the family had not been consulted by anyone from the show or SABC, but they were not against it being aired because Reeva "was proud of being in the show."

"Her last words to us personally was that she wants us to watch it," Sharon Steenkamp said.

The show's executive producer, Samantha Moon, also said that the family wanted the show to go ahead.

"They want it on," said Moon, who works for production company Stimulii. "This is how they want to remember her. This is what she would have wanted."

SABC said the show, where the 29-year-old blonde model and law graduate was expected to be seen laughing and smiling with other contestants and being interviewed by presenters, would also act as a tribute to Steenkamp.

"Definitely the SABC is going ahead with the airing of the program today," spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said, "and we have indicated that we will put massages of condolences on the program."

A Steenkamp family spokesman said late Friday that relatives still faced a long struggle to come to terms with her killing.

"I can't see the family getting over this shortly," Reeva's uncle, Mike Steenkamp said. "It's going to be a long, long-term reconciliation with a lot of things and issues."

Mike Steenkamp said there would be a memorial service for Reeva in her home town of Port Elizabeth, on South Africa's southern coast.

"Reeva's casket is being brought to PE (Port Elizabeth)," he said.
